Well if she managed that feat which would be extremely hard but amazing if she did, I'd rate her the GOAT for sure.

I don't know if I buy that about the Calendar Slam and retiring because all she would have to do is win one more to beat Graf which she would want to do. I can't see her bowing out without trying to defend her slams at the very least. I can see her as long as she is playing well going until she doesn't have a slam to defend. I don't think it is in her nature to not want to defend a slam unless she is physically unable to do it.

There's no way Serena would retire at the French Open when her game is much better suited to grass and hard court. If she's retiring after a slam it'll be the last slam of the year and not the 2nd which I doubt she'll win again but kudos to her for winning RG again for the third time. Very impressive. Depends how she does at all the slams till the US Open next year. Unless she's burnt out why retire? She'd rather have a shot at matching or bettering Graf's 22 slams and she may or may not reach that by then.

I think you misunderstood the poster's intentions. They are just saying she will retire at Fo when she retires, not necessarily next year.

I think their line of thinking comes from the fact that she has a French BF and an apartment in France and there is a projection that she might settle there.
I do not know if Serena has a French boyfriend or not. Until Serena states that fact then I would quote
her. I do not let the media guide me or influence me.

That's cool but lots of people here and other forums seem to think she'll retire after the Olympics but I can't see that personally. That'd mean skipping the US Open and no way she'd do that imo.

As long as she thinks she has a chance to win a slam, she will continue to play, at least until she reaches #25. However, it appears that she said in some interview that if she wins the calendar slam this year, she may consider retirement.

She did not say that.

I will hold my judgement till after the summer slams. The messier than normal way in which she won the AO and RG for me suggests age may be creeping in as an issue. It could just be coincidence that she was not healthy both times. I think we'll know more after this summer.

I do think Serena plays well on bursts of motivation to reach a goal. Whether it's to tie or break a record or prove people wrong that's when she plays best. She's a champion but she doesn't do her best when she just plays to play. If she beats Staffi I'm not sure she will feel a need to continue the grind. Of the Williams sisters it's Venus who has always played more for love of the game and love of the tour.

I'm not sure if she will tell us she's retiring before she makes a decision. I would really prefer if she made a decision and the had a goodbye year. I think 2016 would be a nice round time to retire. I love Serena but I really want to see her enjoy her life and her interests outside tennis while she's still relatively young.

Because of Serena's theatrics, I hope she never wins another major. Her act at this year's French Open made me want to VOL (Vomit Out Loud).

When I hear comments like that I kind of wonder i you actually saw that match or if you're going on anecdotes from other people. I watched that SF. There was not theatrics. Her body language was not good but there was not "theatrics." ITs not like she was playing Steffi or Martina. She was playing basically an unknown. Why would she need to use some kind of tactic like that to beat an unknown? She's one of the greatest players of all time.

I can't see her retiring until she doesn't have a slam to defend. I think if she has a slam to defend and she is healthy then she will give it a go. She may have a limited schedule if she is only defending say a Wimbledon or US Open, but I can't see her at least not trying to defend a slam if she has one to defend.

I think it's prudent to find out what theatrics in particular he's referring to. Is it the SF, the Final or something else?

Chewy,
What specific behavior put you off?

The reason I think they are speaking about the SFs is because that is where many commentators suggested she was playing up her illness. I was in Switzerland watching the SFs and Finals and I asked a few Swiss/French people what they thought of Serena and they immediately brought up the SFs and said they thought she was faking.

I did not want to make a separate thread for this. But, if the OP and/or the moderators feel that it does not belong here, please feel free to move it somewhere else or delete it.

Have you seen this article on racism/sexism/animalism regarding Serena. Although our forum is quite well behaved in this regard, this wave of thinking does not die at all it seems. Also, I hear that there is a lot of controversy over Serena's SF match with many people alleging gamesmanship. Kamakshi lists it as the #2 item in her article on for ESPN on top ten controversies in this year's French Open. However, I personally do not see it as gamesmanship. I don't spend much time on other forums and so I don't know as to what is the argument of detractors.

I read the article. It did not show me anything I did not already know, but it did sadden me to see how brutal people could be. I hope that those types of posters are the minority and not the majority.
