I don't think it is a matter that Serena hasn't been focused on the slams. I do think she had a bit of tunnel vision where she put all her eggs in the French basket and came out flat at Wimbledon, and she is still a little flat right now. I agree for this year to wrap up right anything less than a US Open title will not do, and for that to happen with relative ease, she needs to gain consistency with her serve again. She is making the right moves by regaining some aggression that was missing from her game. Her unforced error count has risen again, but she is making the right choice in being aggressive rather than passive. I think she will iron it out before the US Open. Australia was some misfortune in injury and bad judgment on her part to continue playing doubles. Wimbledon was just horrible, and she should be embarrassed to have been up in the final set and lost. She is going to have her ups and downs, but she is usually better for it. As we saw after her humiliation in Paris last year, she went on a tear on the tour. It has but hasn't happened that way since her Wimbledon defeat to Lisicki. Yes, she has won two titles since that defeat, but her form has dipped and is not as rock solid as it could be right now.

I think the pro and con for Serena is she wants to win these slams so bad that sometimes she does get that tunnel vision and over does or under does things at slams. The interesting irony for Serena is that a place she did consistently well at Australia she hasn't won it since returning from injury in 2011. I don't for see any issues for Serena at the US Open until the later rounds. The interesting thing will be to see where the dark horses like Sam Stosur who has fallen in the rankings or Lisicki will land at the US Open because they can make life difficult for Serena and any of the top players really in the draw early on at the Open.
