Fascinating how they keep going in and out of focus, you cannot relax in such match

Stan is so confident and is playing so well now, he is really frustrating Tomas. Gosh if Tomas loses this serve, it's virtually over.

Man...what backhand passes in the last game. This is over now.

...or is it? Bird gets one break back.

With great players I always feel 1 break of serve is not the end of set or match. But it is so hard to climb up from 2 breaks down. We'll see here.

That's true herios, but so hard to do...maintain your focus throughout the whole match.

Well good job by Tomas of staying alive and saving 1 match point. Stan serves for the match now though.

Nice smile, Tomas. I liked the exchange at the net. And my favourite part of the final, speeches. :D

More work for Tomas...

Tomas turns 30 this year (isn't that crazy? How time flies) - I'm not sure how much more work he can do at this point; I think it may be time to accept him for what he is, one of the 10 or so best players of his generation but not one of the very best. Who knows though, maybe he has a Slam run in him but the clock is ticking.

Of course, it is too early in the season. But, I cannot help but remark that Stan is being
unbelievably consistent so far, instead of putting up topsy turvy performances. He won
Chennai, reached SF at AO and won Rotterdam now.

Last year, he needed time to get grounded after the high of AO win. Now, he seems
comfortable with the fact that he is a top player. He fore sure will make the WTF again.
The real question is how far he can move up. Stan has stated that he wants to get
back to his highest ranking (which is #3) this year.

In particular, I expect Stan to do well in the clay season this year.

Sounds like a good final from 2 guys who are in form to start the year. Hopefully both can keep it up.

Yeah, it was a good final, better for Stan the man, less so for Berdy. ;)

So Wawrinka wins! Congrats to Stan the Man and even though he lost it was a good tournament for Berdych. He has just started working with Vallverdu and I think they are heading in the right direction. Berdych is good on all surfaces so he should challenge for the remaining Grand Slams this year. But I agree the window is not going to stay open long for him.

The last three days of taking my team to the tennis tournament and standing in freezing winds for 10 hours and then coming home and watching Berdych's matches late at night finally did me in. I took some cold medicine before going to bed last night and I had set my alarm clock to get up for the final but Nyquil did me in. haha

I had a feeling Wawrinka would take it but seeing how Berdych only got two breadsticks back November, I think Berdych has to feel that his game is improving and he will be peaking at the right time when Slam Season rolls around.

Clock is ticking all right for him, but I do not think the new coach has made a big of an impact on him just yet. It will take a few months until that can be truly assessed, as it was the case with all of them: Stan, Andy, Kei who's coach change made a difference. Of course, Andy and Kei were also younger.
It would be really shocking to see him ending a career with his biggest win (his master in 2005) at 20 y when ranked 50!! and now that he has been in the top 8 like forever, he cannot replicate that.
Of course back in 2005 there was only a Fedal to contend with, after 2007-08 things changed.

I don't know how many noticed.

This is the first every ATP 500 title for the Man. He has won 6 ATP 250 titles, one ATP 1000
and one GS. But, he did the GS first and then the Masters and then the 500.

Way to go Stan
