I never said he could not play. He certainly had some decent results. But this joker wasted the first 8 years of his career. Being fat, and then deciding, stupidly, to engage in drastic weight loss.

Wasting his best years due to an aversion to self-discipline is what soured me on Fish as well. Then after he dropped the tonnage and was beginning to play well, his on court behavior at different times became off-putting.

Yeh, that is another thing..his "nice guy" act. As soon as things did not go his way he was a crank.

As I posted above, his weight loss clearly led to career ending health issues.

I saw him a dozen times in person after the weight loss and he looked like a POW...very unhealthy.

Well we really don't know what caused his heart problems, I highly doubt it was loss of weight. Usually it is the other way around. Some heart conditions are not detected until some time later in people's lives. I had relatives who lived for years without ever knowing they had heart abnormalities until their heart "told" them.

Anyway I don't think he is that bad of an example of somebody who wasted his career, there are a lot of players that don't take this sport as seriously as somebody like Federer or Nadal. Fish isn't the most talented or most physical specimen out there. As for being a sour loser, well all players at some point show their frustration when they are losing. I know I remember telling: "suck it up and take it as a man" to all of them, Nole included.

I think that such disappointment comes sometimes from setting our expectations too high and if said player doesn't meet our expectations, we tend to be harsh on them. Just my opinion.:)

There is absolutely no excuse for baggy clothes either. He is also rich enough to afford a razor. :laydownlaughing

So you're critique of his tennis aesthetics is baggy clothes and a stubble? Clearly he had great touch, which most fans would find aesthetically pleasing... He had a great backhand, capable of exciting winners.

He definitely wasted some time, and was not as fit as he could have been most of his career. Not sure where in the world losing 30-40 pounds is drastic weight loss.

Hey you are free to enjoy watching his highlight vids, and I am free to say good riddance. 30 pounds when you are 200 is drastic, especially when it leads to numerous serious health issues, which it did. I wish him well, but I hope he continues to play golf.

Simply not true. 170 for Mardy's height is a very good BMI. To my knowledge, he did not drop the weight in a matter of weeks.

RAPID weight loss can indeed cause a host of very serious problems, which can then lead to heart issues. I actually don't think he was a "sore loser", it was more the way he strutted around the court like someone owed him something.

Come on? Are you a physician? If you don't like the guy, fine. I am clearly a big fan, and could do better at letting you have you're own opinion about his personality and game, but how do you know his weight loss contributed to his heart condition. I am not a physician, bu I have never heard of this, and never thought he looked anorexic or anything.

My father is a physician and he knows full well that rapid weight loss can wreak havoc on the nervous system and overhaul health. No he did not lose the weight in a matter of weeks, but he did in a matter of months.

Did you see Fish in person? Without his shirt? I did. I have never seen a pro tennis player look like that, ever.

I know you are a big fan..that is fine..check how many retirements and pullouts he had mid tournament..after the weight loss...go ahead check..half were injuries, and the other half were undisclosed illnesses...he obviously destroyed his immune system (IMO).

Disagree. At 6 foot 2 he should have been mid 180s.

Fair enough Luxilon, I understand your points. Sometimes people just see things differently, that's all.

To me it is a great shame that any young sportsman has to deal with serious health issues, any person for that matter, whatever the cause might be.

Cool. As I noted above, I wish him nothing but good health.

I am cool with everything you say, except the weight/health stuff, because it does not hold up to fact. You are not qualified to make a spot diagnosis (nor would even a physician be without running serious tests). I am also 6'2 and see a physician on a normal basis. 170 is smack in the middle of the normal/health weight range. Index of Ideal Weight and Height

I am in an argumentative mood, I suppose.

Thanks, haha. I do my best.

Mardy got enough legit criticism for being out of shape most of his career, it just seems unfair to say losing weight destroyed his career. Especially when the available data doesn't add up.

I hear ya man.

But when you say the fact don't hold up...again let's look at retirements and defaults post weight loss. And again, I in 30 years of watching pro tennis i Have never seen a player with his appearance. He wasted away his muscle mass.

An elite athlete like him is going to have a different "normal" then an "average" person.

We may have to agree to disagree or at least agree that I don't know if you are right ;). One last shot, Novak is 6'2, 176, but he is on the thin side for sure.

If that is his current weight, then it is interesting since Nadal, Federer (6'1) and Murray (6'2) range from 185-187 Lbs. But as you said, Nole's frame is smaller than those three, and Fish for that matter.

Yeah Nole is also on the skinny side, but my friend was lucky enough to hug him and according to her, his chest is like a stone, all muscles. They did all kinds of tests and determined that it is his ideal weight.

Apparently he is going to be on the cover of some magazine for fitness in September so we can all read about it.

Yes, 176 is the low end of his ideal weight. He has a few pounds to play with. He also, as your friend found out, has lots of lean muscle. And basically no body fat. Fish wasted away his muscle mass. That is why had injury after injury. Knees, Ankles, Foot, Achilles, Shoulder. etc.

I have never heard of a pro tennis player dropping 30 pounds ever. Has Anyone? Why did he do this? He over compensated for his lackadaisical approach for the first 2/3 of his career. I can understand the need for over compensation.

176 is at least his post gluten weight. He talks about going from the 180s to 70s in serve to win.
