Seeds:

1. Nadal
2. Ferrer
3. Fognini
4. Robredo
5. Almagro
6. Granollers
7. Monaco
8. Andujar

So, the whole field from Buenos Aires moved over here and Rafa joins in.

Poor Almagro, he is going to run into Ferrer in SF. If the seeding holds up will lose to
Ferrer for the 16th time. This is one of the situations where Almagro would actually
prefer to be on Nadal's half. At least, there will not be any shame in losing to Nadal.

Oh, come on. Until this year and last no attention has been paid to the Golden Swing. But if you were paying attention, you'd see it's always mostly Spaniards playing Argentines, peppered in with other So. Americans, and the odd otherwise European. This seeding list is par for the course in this part of the season. The anomaly is not Fognini but Nadal.

Exactly. A couple years ago - before Rafa used the "golden swing" for his 2013 comeback tour, that's how it looked.

You are right. I forgot the Fabulous Fabio Fognini. Clay seems to be his forte too.
Also, he is in recent form. Almagro may be thankful to him. ;)

True that it's a combo event, and a new one. Would be fun if we get some cross-pollination conversations about it. :)

Almagro can be thankful for Dolgopolov, who put him out of his misery far earlier than even expected.

Nadal beat Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 7-5. Rafa shaking off some rust, though he had some showy points: some great passing shots and a few world-class drop shots. I counted one really stunning dtl forehand. Daniel was really valiant, I thought. Refused to give up. Went for it, which produced a lot of UFEs, naturally. He'd never taken more than a few games in their previous 2 meetings.

Rafa played extremely conservatively. He never went beyond 3rd gear. Almost no forehand winners, no aces, and very few net approaches. Glorified practice session, but entertaining none the less.

I agree. But it was rather fun, which was down to Gimeno-Traver.

Bellucci upset Monaco today: 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Spanish trio Ferrer, Robredo and Andujar makes the QF as well.

Andujar got through via either retirement or walkover v. Klizan. ATP calls it a retirement, but at 0-0? That's odd, no? Did he get hurt in the warm-up? Side-bar question: It is my understanding that a walkover is not charged as a win or loss, but a retirement is charged as a loss. Is that correct?
