About City

Rio de Janeiro is likely the most beautifully situated major city in the world. Its verdant mountains cascade to wide white beaches. It is the second-largest city and GDP in Brazil. "Cariocas," as the people of Rio are called, have an inclination to be easy-going, but their city is as dramatic as their landscape. The tourism and upper-class life of the beach areas contrasts with the extreme poverty of the favelas. But Rio is a city that offers much to be enjoyed: music, Carnaval, capirinhas, and some of the nicest people you're ever likely to meet. Vinicius de Moraes is its poet-laureate.

I don't even know who's competing in Rio on the women's side. It seems like everyone has pulled out.

I thought the same!

That's weird, but it's official.

Ready to go! Serena Williams lands in Rio for the Olympics (with a whole lot of luggage in tow) and wastes no time in hitting the courts with sister Venus
  • The 34-year-old is looking to score her second individual Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro
  • Grand Slam champions Serena and Venus have also won three Olympic gold medals from women's doubles, which they are competing in again
  • The 2016 Olympics start on Friday with the opening ceremony
