Tomic's dad has been arrested for *allegedly* headbutting Tomic's hitting partner and knocking him out cold.

Jeez. Seems Tomics dad is held in jail & hitting partner still in recovery with neck brace.

stevegtennis‏@stevegtennis5m
Seems Dolgopolov 1st noticed the guy on the ground & alerted staff. Guy was out cold with heavy bleeding.

Dont seem like problem for Tomic but for his Dad who appears to have anger management issues.. shouldnt hurt Bernie.. he can find other hitting partners until this guy recovers

Oh, good grief. Another parent who's a liability to a tennis player. We've talked about Bernie's talent, and also his need to be more mature, in order to make the most of it. This kind of thing cannot help. Thanks for the intel, Iona.

You're welcome Moxie.

A bit more on the story...

John Tomic, the father and coach of Bernard Tomic, was allegedly arrested three days ago prior to the Madrid tournament for allegedly head butting and breaking the nose of his son’s hitting partner, TENNIS.com has learned.

Sources on site told TENNIS.com that Tomic's hitting partner, France’s Thomas Drouet, was knocked out cold for 20 minutes. John Tomic, who has reputation of having a volcanic temper, was said to have spent one to two days in jail. The ATP has confirmed that there was an incident and report they are currently investigating it, but would not reveal details. Sources on site also said that Drouet has since been seen with a neck brace and a cast around his nose.

The French radio station RMC is alleging that John Tomic struck his son while at the tournament in Monte Carlo and that Bernard was bleeding around his jaw area. RMC also reports that Drouet got in between John and Bernard, which later triggered the assault. Drouet is also said to have a fractured vertebrae. Apparently players Alexandr Dolgopolov and Janko Tipsarevic witnessed the attack, where an ambulance was called. John Tomic was said to be summoned to appear in a Madrid court on Monday.

John Tomic is notorious for clashes, including having a public heated argument with Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley that lead to security guards being placed around Tiley; being involved in a road-rage incident in 2006 in which he forced a car occupied by two coaches and a female junior player off the road; and pulling Bernard off the court mid-match at a tournament in Perth when he alleged officials were fixing draws and cheating his then 16-year-old son.

Poor guy, I feel for him. Bernard, I mean. It is not easy to deal with all that, he is just a kid but he will grow up and be able to stand for himself.

Hopefully...

But his role model is not that helpful. And he's displayed a tendency to poor choices, himself. IMO, he needs to get out from under the heel of his crazy dad, find a proper coach and mentor, and be a committed tennis player. And not a brat. We'll see if he can.

Pops needs a sparring partner as much as Bernard needs a hitting partner.

Pops will get many partners in jail.

I am in shock. How drunk someone has to be to break nose to someone hitting the ball.

And never mind the notion that its a 'gentleman's game.' I don't know if he was drunk, but the father surely has anger issues. The son needs a better role-model, and fast.

Hitting partners might need to reword their job title. Old man Tomic might have got the wrong end of the stick on their roles and responsibilities.

I am reading this shocking news after only a few minutes I heard a similar report on the late night news. During a soccer game for teenagers, in Utah, a referee was punched in head by a player of 17 who disliked his decision and the poor guy went into a coma in a few hours and died in a week. zsome people who can't control their temper should stay away from activities which may push them over the edge.

Harsh ;) His old man sounds like a real prick though. Lousy.

i think the ATP should help out little Bernie here - lifetime ban for his father at all ATP/ITF venues, what do you say?

Agreed, I think the public prosecutor in Spain will chip in a little too.

Harsh Moxie. I never cared for Tomic, and definitely think he needs to get his act together, but this makes his stupid petty rebellions seem much more relatable and able to be pitied. Bernard also apparently told on his father to the police (the right thing to do, but I imagine a tough one). This guy makes papa agassi seem like a saint.

He definitely has no business ever setting foot on a ATP tennis court. It's a sport (and not a contact one) there is no justifiable reason to assault and batter someone.

It may be a big problem for Tomic to find a coach, because no one would like to have to deal with his crazy father.

Who are the coaches available for Bernard anyway? Vemic, Ancic, ...

That's a good point. I wouldn't want that job. Who would?
