Roger has only himself to blame for drawing Nadal on QFs repeatedly. He had
a nice draw in French Open (when someone else was seeded five). He did not make
use of that opportunity and reach the Final. If he were able to do that, all of these
would not have happened.

Isnt it an oxymoron to use the word "poor" in regards to Roger Federer:snigger

Exactly. Eventually he had to slide and face these types of draws. This isn't 2006. And he's 32, but still in with a chance. Believe me, nobody gave Pete a chance before the 2002 US Open final* and he won it.

*Nobody except me, who predicted it after his 2nd round defeat at Wimbledon and bought tickets to the final based on that. "Sampras-Agassi final, anyone?" I assed the wife in June, and we were there, in Row Zed, cheering on the Pistol... :)

Dude.. that is awesome.. You saw the Pistol's final match.. I envy you ..

Only way Roger beats Rafa(if they were to meet) at this stage of his career would be in straights unless he tanks a set. No way he can match Rafa's intensity for more than three.

I did! And for two sets he was awesome. Then Agassi came back and Pete did his wounded bear routine in the 4th, maintaining his serve but looking otherwise dead, until the ninth game when he surged back to life and broke! :)

Agassi made the finals at 35.

rosewall has similar accomplishments.

times are changing. now we have no less than 14 players age 30 or over who have titles this year.

anything is possible.

Clay, Agassi played 1144 matches in his career. Roger is at 1119 at the age 32. Mileage issue has changed too...

I thought his showing in Cincy against Rafa was positive. I don't get the negativity - if he's got to face Rafa, better the qf than later. And if he wins, he gets Ferrer in the semis.

Come on, can't keep hoping for the draws he got in the early days!

I'm glad you wrote this. Federer's performance against Rafa in Cincy was great considering Rafa is possibly playing the best hardcourt tennis of his career, and Federer is in the midst of his worst season, a bad back, and some kind of racquet dilemma. I'm actually hoping Federer is healthy and meets Rafa in the QF's.

Andre loves to wet his pants for Pete, that's always been the case. Is that something we don't know?

only if Hewitt made the final instead of Andre, it'd have been massacre!!

Nah.. a fresh and hard serving Pete would have punished Leyton

not 2002 Sampras, no chance - Hewitt always had been a bad matchup for Pete. He was fortunate to have played Agassi, you know that.

I disagree.. Pete beat Roddick Hass and Agassi.. there is no need to mention the others.. he would have beaten Hewitt

Roddick, Haas and Agassi play nothing like Hewitt. An old version of Pete was always going to struggle against Hewitt (the H2H proves this) since Hewitt was in his physical prime, was a hell of a returner, and was too quick off the court. In Pete's prime, it's a different story, but we've seen what Hewitt did to Pete in Sampras' later days.

And in 2001 Pete beat Rafter, Agassi and Safin before getting destroyed by Hewitt in the final. It would have been tough for Pete, not impossible, but Agassi winning gave him way greater odds

Pete was totally gased and flat when he faced Leyton that day although he defeated Hewitt in the USO Semi before getting destroyed by Safin in the finals.

2000 US Open
NY, U.S.A. Hard S
7-6(7), 6-4, 7-6(5) Sampras defeated Hewitt

Destroyed him in 2000 and got destroyed in 2001. 2002 was a very similar setup for Sampras as 2001 was but he had a different opponent, one he totally owned. I was a big Pistol Pete fan too and I was praying for Agassi to take out Lleyton and Id imagine you were thinking the same.

Wait till he reaches quarter...maybe will he be Stakovskysed before (?)
USO is a long and winding road and Mr Vavrinec could be like a candle in the wind

Robredo did the job, not a big surprised for me
