You might be right. Might have just been a point. I do remember thinking he gave up at some point :)

Djokovic/Nishikori play first, that's what they showed at the end of the telecast last night anyways.

Obviously outsiders don't show rescpet to Big three anymore. After 5-6 years they give a try.

Instead Fed in 3.

^Wow! Everyone's so harsh on Gael. I think this one's a bit more excusable than at RG. Mental weakness? Yes absolutely. Not trying or clowning? Very harsh

Yes, winning 2 games is clearly better than none so yesterday wasn't as bad but still didn't strike me as very impressive. The match was 100% level at that stage and it took just 1 set to decide it. Surely he could've mustered up a bit more than he did. RG though was a total disgrace as he had all the momentum in the world winning 2 straight sets and he won the 4th 6-1. I'm not exaggerating, the 5th set against Murray there took 10 minutes. That was 100% embarrassingly bad.

Well, Monfils should have taken a bathroom break at the end of fourth set to regroup himself.
Yes, it is not sportsmanlike, but then hey, it is allowed by the rules and everybody exploits
it including Fed and Rafa.

Then, he would have had time to realize that the situation is not bad at all even though
it seemed like that in first glance. Given that Fed tends to blink in tight fifth set contests,
if he had made it tight, it is possible that Fed would have provided some help to La Monf.

^ Yeah but Roger lost that set in both those USO matches 7-5 not 6-2. Still miles apart.

It is not so much about the score. It is a question whether a good faith effort was made.
Monf clearly was not involved in the fifth set.

^ I hope folks aren't coming to that judgement based on that front tweener attempt. Have a look at it again. There was a lot of depth on that volley, and it knifed right at him. I'm not sure what he could have done. But I'll accept that I only watched the last set and a half so maybe I'm missing the overall flow of the match. Still, it seems a bit harsh to say he gave up from what I saw

That was not the only shot. I remember another one where he attempted to drop shot in
the 5th set in a rally that has not gone for long in the first place and he just stabbed at
the ball and it did not even go cross half the distance between himself and the net. The
drop shot there was a poor choice and the execution was even poorer.

OK folks, this thread is disintegratin to Monfils - Fed thread. Let us get back on track.

Cilic has definitely improved his game. I do remember the first set of Cilic against
Djokovic in Miami or IW this year. He was just going for the lines and hitting hard.
everything worked out. But, it is unsustainable over the course of a 5 set match.
Cilic lacks variety and plan B.

I give Cilic one set sometime during the match when his ball bashing works.
That is all he will get.

Fed in four.

not really sure if fed wil win this. he has to serve well for one and his forehand has to on mark. if either one or both are not there i dont see him winning unless cilic bows down.

The two sets Cilic won against Roger were some weeks ago in Toronto and at the US Open 2011 I think, so this should be a somewhat competitive match. It remains to be seen how Federer recovers from the match against Monfils as he wasn't too sharp after the also rather short five setters against Tsonga and Simon in last year's Australian and French Open.

For Cilic I'm not sure if he has improved enough mentally to win such a match if it is somewhat close, as he didn't do much when he had the momentum or even a 2:1 lead against Novak at the French Open respectively Wimbledon. I think Federer winning in 4 or maybe 5 sets is the most likely result.

I wonder who plays the first semi. Anyone knows the schedule?

Weird ...Nole-Niko at 12.00, Roger-Cilic NOT BEFORE 1.30. Well, you don't say...

Maybe they are thinking NiKo will retire? If that match ends before 1.30 without a retirement, there would not be enough baked goodies for that scoreline.

I think it is a joke. On the other hand seriously speaking, they might want to be interested
in covering all bases to protect themselves.

You can see that for the women's doubles finals, they have said not before 3:00 p.m.
as though they expect BOTH men's doubles to be over before 3 p.m. That is just impossible
unless both Kei and Cilic retire.
