The Tournament:

The ATP Finals is the season-ending championship of the ATP Tour. It is the most significant tennis event in the men's annual calendar after the four majors, as it features the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams based on their results throughout the season. The eighth spot is reserved, if needed, for a player or team who won a major in the current year and is ranked from ninth to twentieth.

The tournament uses a unique format not seen in other ATP Tour events, where the singles players and doubles teams are separated into two groups of four, within which they each play three round-robin matches. After the round-robin stage, the top two performers from each group play in knock-out semifinals and a final to determine the champion(s).

The tournament was first held in 1970, shortly after the beginning of the Open Era. Novak Djokovic holds the record for the most singles titles with seven, while Peter Fleming and John McEnroe jointly hold the record for the most doubles titles with seven (all won consecutively as a team).

In the tournament's current format, the champion can earn a maximum of 1,500 ranking points, if they win the event after going undefeated in the round-robin stage. By winning the 2022 title, Djokovic earned a record $4,740,300, the highest payout for a tournament winner in tennis. Also that year, Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury claimed $930,300, the highest payout in doubles history.

About Turin:

Turin is a city and an important business and cultural centre in Northern Italy. It is the capital city of Piedmont and of the Metropolitan City of Turin, and was the first Italian capital from 1861 to 1865. The city is mainly on the western bank of the Po River, below its Susa Valley, and is surrounded by the western Alpine arch and Superga hill. The population of the city proper is 847,622 (30 June 2024), while the population of the urban area is estimated by Eurostat to be 1.7 million inhabitants. The Turin metropolitan area is estimated by the OECD to have a population of 2.2 million.

The city was historically a major European political centre. From 1563, it was the capital of the Duchy of Savoy, then of the Kingdom of Sardinia ruled by the House of Savoy, and the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. Turin is sometimes called "the cradle of Italian liberty" for having been the political and intellectual centre of the Risorgimento that led to the unification of Italy, as well as the birthplace of notable individuals who contributed to it, such as Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. Although much of its political influence had been lost by World War II, having been a centre of anti-fascist movements during the Ventennio fascista including the Italian resistance movement, Turin became a major European crossroad for industry, commerce and trade, and is part of the industrial triangle along with Milan and Genoa. It is ranked third in Italy, after Milan and Rome, for economic strength.

Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from Turin, meaning Musetti will replace him, FAA also qualifies
Bublik will be the 1st alternate
A second alternate will be announced soon ( I am guessing it could be Ruud)
Ruud has now been confirmed as the 2nd alternate

The final singles match will start
Zverev v Shelton, Shelton won the toss and elected to serve
From what I have read Zverev's ankle is okay and he said he has been training well since Paris Masters where he had a fall during his match with Medvedev
Zverev leads their H2H 4-0

Zverev broke Shelton to love and consolidated leads 5-3 1st set
Zverev seeing the 'ball early' so far in the match
Zverev breaks for the 1st set and wins it 6-3, also serving very well, Shelton making far too many ufe in the 1st set

Zverev's hard flat ball, is too much for Shelton, whose top spin takes the ball right into the Zverev's hitting zone. I do not understand why Shelton keeps trying his suicide net approaches, he keeps getting passed.
Shelton will serve to force a TB for the 2nd set 5-6
6 games all 2nd set, TB to begin, Zverev to serve first
Ben had a mini break as Zverev's 2nd serve let him down had 2 SP 6-4 and Zverev with good returning saves 2 SP and it is 6 all
Zverev wins the 2nd set 76(6) a set Shelton could have won, he made too many ufe
Zverev d Shelton 63 76(6)
BTW. Zverev is 36-1 against lefties, the loss was Tien, Acapulco

In the 1st singles match earlier
Alccaraz d de Minaur 76(5) 62

FAA struggles late, looks a big gassed and Sinner breaks from 30-0 down in the 12th game to win the 1st set 75
Sinner serving brilliantly winning 24 of 27 service points ( won all 21 first serve points)
A enjoyable match to watch, high quality., 1st set.
MTO early in the 2nd set for FAA, left calf issue

Sinner will serve for the match 5-1, winning the 1st set 75, which was a high quality match between the 2 players
Felix has problem with a left calf issue sad to say, I thought it might have been his left knee, which he has had issues in the past as I was texting my good Canadian friend during the match, she said you have to be at 100% fit to have a chance with Sinner. Sinner played great in the 1st set, his serve was outstanding.
Felix does have the day off tomorrow, so maybe there is a chance he can get some treatment for his left calf
Sinner d FAA 75 61

Alcaraz d Fritz 67(2) 75 63
Good comeback from Carlos
Fritz played a great 1st set winning 76(2) but could not keep the level up
The key difference ended up being Carlos ability to steal a few big points from Fritz attacking positions.
Fritz at the net 12/30 Carlos at the net 23/26
Carlos is now 2-0 in the Jimmy Connors Group, BTW 50 career top ten wins for Alcaraz. 15 in 2025.
If Carlos wins his next match he will end the year as No 1
Carlos plays Musetti on Thursday

Alex de Minaur breaks the serve of Musetti and will now serve for the 2nd set 5-3
Alex wins the 2nd set 63 saving BPs he will not be eliminated today
Going 3 sets!
Alex is up a break in the final set leading 4-2
Alex serving for the match at 5-4
30 all and Alex gets a time violation on his serve
BP for Lorenzo
Lorenzo breaks the serve of Alex when serving for the match 5 all now 3rd set, how many times after a serve violation have we seen the player either DF or hands the break to the returner!
Alex will now serve to force a TB for the 3rd set at 5-6
Lorenzo with MP with a great ROS, snuffed out with a good serve from Alex, deuce
MP No 2 for Lorenzo, your killing me now Lorenzo
Lorenzo Forza!
Musetti d de Minaur 75 36 75!
Musetti has now won 4 consecutive matches against Alex, great comeback from Lorenzo 2 points away from being down BP twice in the 3rd set
That is the fighting spirit I have been talking about Lorenzo, you looked down and out but found a way to win Forza!
