Maybe organizers think that Federer is not going to play so they want one big name like Rafa? Apparently Federer hasn't yet replied to tournament director about his participation:

Thanks for the link, Billie.

I'm surprised by the article. It doesn't seem very Federeresque, especially in the context of a Swiss tournament.

Yeah Fed did not look great in this article, but maybe there is another side to this.

Look who wrote it though. Matt Cronin. That clown puts a stupid attention seeking, argument starting, debating inducing slant on everything. The guy's a joke. His articles are only there to stir the sh1t.

I will be interested to hear Fed's response, but Cronin didn't write the quotes. I will say I am not a Fed fan, but even for his ego, this stuff does seem to be a stretch, so I am expecting more to the story. It would be great if that tournament had Fed, Nadal, and Delpo though, so I hope it is more rumor than reality. The more competitive indoor tournaments, the better.

I was under the impression that Fed decided to play Basel a couple weeks back. I know there has been some issues there.

Interesting choice for Rafa but if he was going to forgo Paris again it makes sense to play Basel instead of Tokyo which is earlier in the Fall. Will his schedule be Shanghai, Basel and YEC?

It's not like he picks on any one player at least but Cronin never gives any of the context of full interviews and just sticks up a dumb misleading title heading and stupidly inserted quotes that without the full source of interview/press statement, etc mean absolutely nothing and are completely different from what the player intended them to be. Would certainly be great to see Nadal, Fed and Del Potro there alright.

i bet federers really chuffed with this breaking news..

losing at home to del potro isn't great but Federer had achieved what he wanted by then in 2012..the prospect of nadal trying to defeat him at his home tourney under any circumstances must give poor old fed the Boak.

if nadal beats federer in the final..prepare for a wall of aching vomit.

Issue is - Fed asks for 2 million, they don't offer 7 digits.

This is the hilarious thing about that clown Matt Cronin's articles. You really think Nadal will demand any less than Federer? Chile isn't a rich country by any means and Nadal got 2 million to play there. At least the Swiss can afford it.

I love it that Nadal is going to Basel. Perhaps Federer will go to Barcelona next year.

I've never seen anything official on these appearance fees - it strikes me as rather stunning to think that Federer would seek >$1 Million just to show up.

Am I being completely naive about this side of the game?

Afraid so ;) The top guys are greedy. Even worse for exhibitions.

Agreed, some of the top guys get more in appearance money at certain tournaments than prize money. Non mandatory events have to pay through the nose for these players to roll in.

And who said they can't afford it? They are not giving it to him. btw, info is not from Cronin's articles.
