Strange that he he has chosen to play Basel when he could play at home in Valencia the same week. He normally doesn't play Bercy the week after this. The only justification for this decision might be a hefty appearance fee.

Two possibilities. Most likely (A) hefty appearance fee from the affluent Swiss and (B) very similar surface to the WTF, which he may be targeting to do better at this year so it's a good warm up.

These are both likely reasons, and your (B) is a good calculation, in terms of tennis. And, sentimentally, perhaps he's disinclined to keep beating-up on his fellow Spaniards. Valencia might be the easier path, but Basel seems the better testing-ground.

He wants the WTF title.

Why wouldn't he? For some, it's the only thing he lacks, in terms of the biggest prizes.

He just never learns, does he?

It seems like 7 months wasn't enough time to set his mind straight!

Well, this is a surprise to me. Honestly Nadal does not like this surface and it is a 500 event (plenty of those on clay for his quota per year), it is also a week before Paris (correct me if I am wrong). Maybe organizers think that Federer is not going to play so they want one big name like Rafa? Apparently Federer hasn't yet replied to tournament director about his participation:

I really thought that in order to prolong his career and play very competitively for as long as possible Nadal would be careful about extra hard-court non-mandatory events. But maybe his knees are better than I think they are, who knows.:)

Thanks for the link, Billie.

I'm surprised by the article. It doesn't seem very Federeresque, especially in the context of a Swiss tournament.

I understand Federer, it is his home town tournament but it takes a lot out of a player especially so close to a Masters 1000, so it is not easy for him to decide.

But Rafa doesn't have those problems (if anything he would contemplate Barcelona) so in that sense it is a surprise to me. I am not saying he should or should not play, just that I am surprised that he elected to play this particular event.:)

Oh, come on CD...it doesn't mean he's adding to his calendar, it only means he's playing a different tournament. Did you even check? That's such a tired cliché.

Am I the only one who thinks this means he won't play Paris? A tournament he hasn't played in for the past 3 years. So for those freaking out over scheduling, think about that first.

I think they announced this to kind of force Federer's hand in playing Basel since he rejected their first offer and hasn't said anything about the second offer they made to him.

Yeah Fed did not look great in this article, but maybe there is another side to this.

Look who wrote it though. Matt Cronin. That clown puts a stupid attention seeking, argument starting, debating inducing slant on everything. The guy's a joke. His articles are only there to stir the sh1t.
