Tournament Info

The Mutua Madrid Open is one of the premier events on the WTA calendar and a centrepiece of the European clay-court season. As a WTA 1000 tournament, Madrid draws the very best players in the world for two weeks of high-stakes competition in the Spanish capital.

Since moving to clay in 2009, the tournament has been staged at the striking Caja Magica, a modern, multi-stadium complex featuring retractable roofs and cutting-edge design. The venue’s unique architecture — combined with Madrid’s altitude of around 650 metres above sea level — produces slightly quicker clay-court conditions than many other stops on the circuit. The result is dynamic, attacking tennis where power and precision are often rewarded.

The women’s event has crowned some of the sport’s biggest names and frequently delivers dramatic, late-night encounters under the lights. The passionate Spanish crowd, vibrant fan zones, and festival-like atmosphere add to the sense of occasion, making Madrid one of the most anticipated tournaments outside the Grand Slams.

As a key lead-in to Roland Garros, the Mutua Madrid Open offers players an opportunity to test their clay-court form against elite opposition in a bold and theatrical setting. Blending world-class tennis with Madrid’s unmistakable energy, the WTA event stands as one of the highlights of the season.

About Madrid

Spain’s capital is a city of grand boulevards, royal history, and infectious energy. Situated in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid blends stately architecture with an unmistakably lively rhythm of life.

The historic centre revolves around landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and Puerta del Sol, while world-renowned museums — including the Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza — form part of the celebrated “Golden Triangle of Art.” Elegant parks like El Retiro provide green sanctuary in the heart of the city, balancing Madrid’s cosmopolitan pace with moments of calm.

Madrid is also a city that thrives after dark. Late dinners, vibrant tapas bars, and bustling plazas reflect a culture built on social connection and celebration. During tournament week, that energy flows directly into the Caja Mágica, where packed stands and passionate fans create a distinctive atmosphere.

Modern yet steeped in history, refined yet exuberant, Madrid offers a fitting stage for one of the sport’s biggest clay-court battles — where altitude, ambition, and Spanish flair converge on the world stage.

There are thunderstorms in the area, one good factor at Madrid is they have 3 roofs, some play had to be suspended

Paula Badosa who received a wild card was defeated in 3 sets by Austrian player Grabher, the former No 2 player is just a shadow of her former self these days, ( injuries have taken a toll ) her ranking has plummeted to around 103, and will plummet further after today
Grabher d Badosa 76(3) 46 60

Kaitlin Quevedo wins 6 of the last 7 games was down 0-3 in the 2nd set and wins 62 64 over Venus Williams WC

Another player who is a shadow of her former self Haddad Maia, former No 10 player, going out again in a 1st round match, Bouzas Maneiro d Haddad Maia 61 61

Venus Williams says in her press conference that she wants to play Roland Garros
" My husband is Italian, I would love to play Rome as well but that wont be possible"
Rome gave all the wild cards to Italian players

Peyton Stearns dominant over Boisson 61 63. It was Boisson's 1st match back in over 6 months, good to see Boisson back from the quadriceps tear.
Stearns will face Sabalenka in R2

Watching the repeat of Venus Wms. match! When will it become apparent she's wasting her time out there taking up a legit spot in a women's draw? At least win 1 match if you want to hoard WC bids from more qualified "up & comers!" Saying she fills seats is total BS; esp. abroad from the US! I'm looking at a ton of empty seats! She's been quoted as wanting to play RG's since her new husband is Italian! :thinking-face: IDK what TF that means! I'll be getting on Novak's case if he doesn't look as if he can legitimately compete! So far he's faring better than kids actually fighting for their rankings! He's still #4 in the World while Venus fell off the side of a cliff yrs. ago! She got a nice lit'l break in the 2nd set, needing them to close the roof due to rain! The girls have no fear of her! :astonished-face::yawningface::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

Venus Williams will keep getting wild cards usually she fills seats/ stadiums, wherever she plays,
Venus Never said she wanted to play RG as her husband is Italian, Venus said she wanted to play Roland Garros
Venus said she wanted to play Rome as her husband is Italian, get your facts straight and Rome has already given out their wild cards to Italian players which I posted on the WTA News a few days ago!

The WTA qualifiers are doing well, Kalinina, Snigur, Parks, Galfi, Jeanjean, Waltert, Grant and LL Starodubtseva, Udvardy and wild cards, Quevedo, Samson, Arango.'
Q Kruss was able to push Pliskova to 3 sets today.

The top half seeds play tomorrow. I think there will be a few casualties, but they're tough to predict.

Hello everybody!!! Yeah my favorite match today was easily Tereza vs Yulia. I'm a big fan of both but especially Tereza and I thought Tereza played really well even in defeat. She just kept her head down and kept fighting. And Yulia just was sublime with her shots and definitely taught Tereza a few things! I was also impressed with another one if my favorites in Zeynep. I liked seeing that fire from her!
