Messy or not, he was efficient so far, according to his age.
By that measure, he is actually one step ahead of Sasha, in terms of their ranking at the same age.
Sasha broke into the top 50 about 2 years ago, when he turned 19, while Shapovalov managed that several months before turning 19.
Of course, Sasha kept moving up after that, so we shall see how Denis will do.
I am really positive about him, because 1 month ago he looked like will do not much on clay, and a few weeks later he made the SF of a master. Again, that is outstanding considering he just turned 19.
I'm not against Denis the Menace, but he still plays like a kid, i.e., more raw talent than head. I don't disagree that he's got talent, and I hope he realizes it, but, to me, his game is still a bit all over the place. It really needs some discipline. Who's coaching him?

What an awful result. Thiem does all the hardwork and the Mugrev the vulture just snaps up? Really? Disgusting result for tennis and humanity.

And what repels you so much about the result? ("Disgusting for humanity?" That seems a bit hyperbolic and hysterical.) You don't like Zverev? You wish that Thiem were more of a threat on clay so that he could potentially get Nadal at RG? You didn't like the match? Did you watch it? Please say what was so awful about it, in your opinion.

As an aside, one of the Bryan Brothers got a hitch in his hip during the final and they had to retire. Apparently, this is the first match in 1000+ that they have ever retired out of. At 40, if they had won, they'd have returned to #1 in doubles. Pretty amazing.

I didn't see this match, but Shapavolov has a lot of growing up to do, imo. His tennis is as messy as his self-presentation. He's young. I think a lot of people look to him because he beat Nadal. He needs to clean up his game a lot from the ball-bashing that it is. He's got talent, but he's really all over the place.
You, herios and a few of anti Rafaies tried to play King maker with Shapavolov just like you did year earlier with Pouille when Rafa laid a brief turd in one of their encounters..

Why shouldn't it repel you? If you're a true tennis fan you should be repelled.

First of all Mugrev is not even a claycourter, he's basically a poor man's fakervic with a worse FH. Thiem is the classical claycourter and he took out the clay monster, overcome his boogie man in Kanderson so this should've been a cakewalk and he didn't win a set. Mugrev vultured yet another MS title without beating tough opponents. And it's sad that he has more clay MS than Thiem. You don't think that's bad?

I don't think Thiem is a classic clay courter. I think he's a solid tennis player with a preference for clay. What about his play do you find "classic clay-courter?" He moves well on clay and he has a patient game, but I didn't peg him for clay, early on. As for Zverer, I'm think he's a better player than Thiem, and he has 3 MS, v. Thiem who has none. That he has 2 on clay I have said I find surprising. I also think they could be a bit circumstantial, but I don't know why any tennis fan should be repelled. If you don't like Zverev, that's on you. He's a very talented tennis player and he has a champion's mentality, imo. How can I think it's bad for tennis if he wins playing well? I do find it puny and adolescent that you can't express your opinion about tennis without resorting to so many derogatory nicknames and digs within each sentence, but that's a style choice, I suppose, and it's yours. It doesn't impress me, particularly, about your opinions, though. It rather diminishes them.

Did you mean to quote me on this? I've never tried to make a king out of either Shapavolov or Pouille.

Wow; What's it been about 15 years since we've had such a diverse collection of winners so far with no double winners? Finally! It really helped that Thiem and Zverev came to play and overtook the geezers! "Bless the Next Gen!" :yesyes:  :pompoms:

I was rooting for Thiem here because I like his game more than Zverev's. I'm not disputing that Zverev is a major force to be reckoned with and few can exploit his weaknesses. I think that's what Zverev did well not allowing Thiem to do that. But then again I don't think there are many on the tour that can...

Safin was before my time so I can’t compare him to AZ who reminds me of Djoke. He’ll get to number one but not be a favorite, sort of like Djoke who was and will never be as popular as Fedal. AZ can continue winning, but I won’t watch unless he’s playing an opponent I like or dislike. I do think this will be what most casual tennis fans do which should be cause for grave concern among the atp heads. When Fedal retires, viewership will drop dramatically unless there’s a player who is entertaining to watch.

Looks like the clay sweep still belongs to Muster. If even Wafa can't break it then it will never be broken.

Unfortunately a very busy day today so I cannot dwell on this... but Thiem has a lot of top spin, hits well while sliding, uses a lot of the DTL back hand and is patient enough. If he is not a classic clay courter, no one else bellow 25 years old on the radar is.
I appreciate the correction. :)
