Tournament Info

The Mutua Madrid Open is one of the flagship events of the European clay-court season and a crucial stop on the road to Roland Garros. As an ATP Masters 1000 tournament (and a combined ATP/WTA 1000 event), Madrid consistently attracts the world’s top players for two weeks of elite competition in the Spanish capital.

Originally founded in 2002 as an indoor hard-court event, the tournament made a bold transition to outdoor clay in 2009, moving to its striking modern home, the Caja Magica. The venue’s retractable-roof stadiums and futuristic design set it apart from more traditional clay venues. Madrid’s altitude — approximately 650 metres above sea level — creates slightly faster clay-court conditions, rewarding aggressive baseline play, big serving, and players willing to take initiative.

The tournament has crowned some of the sport’s greatest champions and regularly produces high-intensity matches deep into the evening. With large crowds, dramatic lighting under night sessions, and a vibrant fan village atmosphere, Madrid combines Spanish passion with world-class sporting theatre.

About Madrid

Spain’s capital is a city of grand boulevards, royal history, and infectious energy. Situated in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid blends stately architecture with an unmistakably lively rhythm of life.

The historic centre revolves around landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and Puerta del Sol, while world-renowned museums — including the Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza — form part of the celebrated “Golden Triangle of Art.” Elegant parks like El Retiro provide green sanctuary in the heart of the city, balancing Madrid’s cosmopolitan pace with moments of calm.

Madrid is also a city that thrives after dark. Late dinners, vibrant tapas bars, and bustling plazas reflect a culture built on social connection and celebration. During tournament week, that energy flows directly into the Caja Mágica, where packed stands and passionate fans create a distinctive atmosphere.

Modern yet steeped in history, refined yet exuberant, Madrid offers a fitting stage for one of the sport’s biggest clay-court battles — where altitude, ambition, and Spanish flair converge on the world stage.

Jannik Sinner has confirmed that he will play ATP1000 Masters Madrid and had his first practice session against Thiago Tirante in Madrid today.
He must really want to build a lead on Chuck, but to me this is ill-advised after all the tennis he's played. Madrid clay is not the same as MC, Rome or RG.

Personally I didnt want him to play Madrid as I Hate it, never been a tournament for building towards Roma or RG in saying that it is a Mandatory tournament, he could not play last year, ( due to suspension) also he has the momentum now, and his team feels play Madrid as he would have to wait to play Roma, his momentum maybe stopped, he does have points to defend in Roma
Also he has a chance to be the first player in history to win 5 consecutive Masters tournaments if he wins Madrid:)

Here is a little tour from a fan perspective:

I have been to Madrid and did not have the slightest interest in going to the Magic Box, that 'mad man Tirac' who owned the tournament before selling it to IMG, put me off quite frankly and there are other clay tournaments in Europe that have 'proper clay' to visit, MC and Barcelona for example.and of course Roma I could not leave that out :)

The draw has been done
There is a late withdrawal which is no surprise Jack Draper ( leg injury) will be replaced by LL
Seeing Draper is a late withdrawal, which moves Alex Michelsen to the No 33 seed and out of the way for Canadian Gabriel Diallo who squeezed in as No 32 seed and gets a first round bye

BTW, with Draper's withdrawal he will drop out of the Top 40

Also I have seen Gilles Cervara, former long time coach of Medvedev, in practice with Hubi Hukacz via video in Madrid
It has been confirmed that Gilles Cervara has been added to Hubi's coaching team

Is it Sigmund Freud or Carl Jung is coaching Medvedev now, I can’t remember..

:popcorn
Thank you for making me laugh Kieran
Medvedev has 2 coaches, Thomas Johansson and former coach of Richard Krajicek Rohan Goetzke
You can decide which one is Freud or Jung :)

Just watched a practice video of Casper Ruud, defending champion, good to see he isnt wearing the calf bandage, he had to retire in Monte Carlo, I thought he may withdraw in Madrid.

Madrid Update:
OUT: Collignon
IN: LL

This is interesting,
The Alitude effect in Madrid, - 600m above sea level
First serve points won ( 5-years average)
- Madrid 71.5%
- Rome 69.1%
-MC 67.1%

The ATP seeded players will begin their first round matches on Friday
The main draw gets underway tomorrow Wednesday
I dont like the way they do it of the ATP and WTA draws arent always on the same round on the same day, thats the way they do it in Madrid.
Day sessions start 11.00am local time
Night sessions start at 8.00pm local time

Sinner Interview

Leo AI Overview:

Jannik's Clay Court Performance & Evolution
  • Won his first big clay title in Monaco, which he describes as a significant confidence boost
  • Acknowledges clay isn't his favourite surface, but has always felt his game was improving on it
  • Believes last year's clay season, despite limited tournaments, gave him valuable positive lessons
Physical & Mental Approach to Clay
  • Emphasises that physical fitness plays a big role in performing well on clay
  • Notes each clay tournament is very different: Monaco, Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros (Paris) all require different approaches
Background & Surface Preferences
  • Grew up in a region with heavy snowfall, limiting clay court time
  • Naturally more comfortable on hard courts due to his flat hitting style
  • Believes a good player must be competitive on all surfaces
Clay-Specific Skills
  • Enjoys sliding on clay, though recognises that avoiding the slide sometimes means better point control
  • Not every perfect shot is needed on clay, a "good enough" shot can still be effective
Adding Variety to His Game
  • Has been incorporating drop shots more frequently as a tactical weapon
  • Sees the drop shot as a useful "mixup" rather than an outright point-winner
  • Has great role models he draws inspiration from
  • His overall goal is to become the best version of himself

A better version of Sinner is scary. It does make me wonder: What does he need to do to get the over Alcaraz, beyond indoor hards? What would give him the edge? It is really hard imagining, as he seems maxed out already. I suppose him adding variety--as he says--is the main thing. I think finding a way into Alcaraz's head is another, or possibly related. Meaning, he needs to find a way to keep Carlos from finding "God Mode."

Sinner has not necessarily 'maxed out' though he has reached a dominant, elite level that makes further improvement difficult
Sinner has demonstrated immense maturity, improved his serve significantly ( increasing ace count by 50% from 2022 to 2024) and shown top tier resilience in high pressure moments, I feel he is more consistent than Alcaraz in ways.
I also felt he used good tactics in defeating Alcaraz recently in MC, pinning him in his bhand wing, not being able use his fhand, at one count Alcaraz had 14 UFE on his bhand, in the match
I feel he can improve his physical endurance for longer matches, his 5 set record (6-10), lower than his rival Alcaraz
He has indicated the ability to continue to evolve his game rather than having reached a permanent ceiling
