It sure cost him job as it was not a politically correct thing to say in public, especially when you hold such a position. But, there is an element of truth in it.

He was the tournament director, and women played 50% of the event. It wasn't just impolitic of him to say it, it was stupid. The women's tour was also paying part of his salary.

In my experience nothing unites the men on these boards like a perceived feminist post. If that distracts from the stupidity of the above, you're welcome.
