Nadal was appalling by his standards in the first set... he was misfiring all over the place and despite a good first serve percentage, it was cannon fodder for Murray. He looked tight and Murray was playing pretty well. I don't think Murray's level dropped significantly, but Nadal's rose and once he started planting seeds in the Scot's head... it's a different story. When they are both dialled in, Nadal ultimately takes over the match.

One thing not mentioned during the Nadal/Murray match was the time violation call on match point. This was frankly bad umpiring. Nadal should have been called for it earlier, and I believe Murray was over the 25 seconds also on average... but calling it on match point, when you are waiting for the crowd to be quiet and settle down? Ridiculous call.

Historically, Rafa has been an absolutely atrocious match-up for Monfils, especially on clay. If Rafa loses then that's a really worrying sign.

I'm thinking this is just the 2nd MS final Monfils has made. I know he made the 2010 Paris final and lost to Sod, can't remember any others off the top of my head.

I checked and it is his third. He made the Paris final in 2009 as well losing to Djokovic.
