Especially first serve, the last I checked it was 72% and 52% points won on first and 2nd. Very low for him on fast grass. The 68% is very good

Next up winner of G. Pella and Prajnesh an Indian qualifier. The second match will be an easy one considering Shapo exited promptly.

SF projection at the moment is either Nick or Deliciano a grass aficionado.

Considering he is coming back from a three month break, I will give him a pass as he got the job done. I am sure he will steadily improve with more matches under his belt.

Everyone said that was a tough opening match, esp. after 3 months, and it was. And it sounded like he was scraping the rust off as it went.

Haha. How generous of you to give him a pass. You weren't giving him a pass earlier during your meltdown when he was down a set.

Just watched the highlights. I think it's a very good 1st round match to have had. I also believe as others have stated he will get better as the tournament moves on.

Oh, yes. I would not give him a pass if he had lost today. All that I am saying is he could suck as much as he wanted to as long as he wins the match.

p.s. Actually, even now I am only grudgingly giving him a pass. Roger had a streak of 30 consecutive sets won on grass starting with his first match in Halle last year. If he had won Stuttgart, Halle and Wimbledon without losing a set, that streak would have lengthened to 69 sets eclipsing Peasant's 50 consecutive sets on dirt. A great opportunity missed.

I heard about two players from India before, but never about this one. Sort of headscratcher

I have not heard of this guy before either. I have only heard of Yuki Bhambri and Somdev DevVarman (what happened to him, I have not heard about him for a long time now), restricting to singles players.

I checked apparently Somdev he announced his retirement on 1st Jan 2017.

This guy actually beat John Isner in NCAA finals in singles (of course, over a bunch of TB sets) and then their career diverged into two different paths. He barely had two mediocre years in the circuit.

Yes, Somdev has retired indeed.
India's current top player is Bhambri, just barely in the top 100 but also young. I think it was more Denis's undoing, for not training enough to transition smoother to grass.

Strange to learn both from reports and the highlights that Fed received more German crowd support and cheers than his German opponent Zverev. And apparently, it's the case in other countries where he goes to play. When did it last happen in tennis that a given visiting player was more popular than locals? Well, in case of Zverev, it could be chauvinism against his half-Russian heritage but I exclude that explanation, as a similar popularity outcome is when Fed plays e.g. Kohl in Germany.

it's the case everywhere with Federer. In fact the only place it doesn't happen is when Roger has played Rafa in Spain. Otherwise the support for Federer tends to match the home player. I rather suspect that if Roger played Kei in Tokyo, Kei would comfortably have support, apart from him hard to think of too many other players. Novak in Serbia of course...

London Olympics 2012 - the home crowd was definitely with Murray. I think that's just the Country>Player scenario where it comes to events like the Olympics. I reckon a Davis Cup tie would be the same. In contrast, at the YEC in London, people who have gone, generally say Federer gets the majority of the support when he plays Murray.

Yes, this is true..GSM knew he was gonna get rafafied (crucified) if Roger drop a calf and lost that match. GSM can be as fickle as the crowd at the French open

Pella took out the Indian guy, so we won't hear much about him anytime soon.

In the case of the YEC/WTF it's most likely a case of them cheering for Federer over Murray 'cos if they wanted to see a fella clutching every part of his body and mumbling like a baboon, they'd go to accident and emergency at the nearest hospital instead. Hard to support such muppetry.
