RE: Maria Sharapova to change her name to Maria Sugarpova for the US Open

After her early loss in Cinci, now we know why she didn't take a WC into New Haven. She's got to make sure her name gets changed legally so she can market her product at work of all places.

Interesting, at my job if we are caught doing another job or selling products from another company, it's grounds for termination. :puzzled

dear lord - reading the post, i was 100% sure that this must be a hoax. but if it is, they fooled the times. if not, then this is positively ridiculous. in a bad way. chances are it still is hoax-ish, in that even if comes from the Pova camp, they're not really contemplating going through with it, but just "leaked" the "plan" to get the attention - which has already worked.

She won't and or can't improve her oncourt skills (bye Jimmy), so she's gonna ride the money train all the way to the bank. A clown is fitting!!

Good. I hope this a publicity stunt, and nothing more.

But that's pretty sad if it is a stunt T. To think that she and her media team would cosign something so ludicrous just for attention. Why does Maria need attention? She's getting plenty of it w/ her Connors firing and the state of her game right now. If she really wanted to garner positive attention, she should try having a tennis camp in NY for underprivileged kids where Sugapova donates the court time, racquets, balls, etc.

RE: Maria Sharapova to change her name to Maria Sugarpova for the US Open

LOL @ Spice girl of the Candy World

Maria Sharapova won't become the next World B. Free, Chad Ochocinco or Metta World Peace.

After what her agent calls serious consideration, the tennis player has decided not to change her name to Sugarpova for the US Open next week.

The Times of London reported that the tennis player was set to change her name to the name of her candy company for the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, but her agent, Max Eisenbud, told ESPN on Tuesday that "we ultimately decided against it."

"Maria has pushed her team to do fun, out-of-the-box-type things to get the word out about Sugarpova," Eisenbud said. "In Miami, we're going to fill a glass truck full of candy and drive it around town. This was an idea that fell along those lines. But, at the end of the day, we would have to change all her identification, she has to travel to Japan and China right after the tournament and it was going to be very difficult."

In order to change her name, Sharapova -- who is a Russian citizen but has a green card and resides in Florida -- would have had to file a name change petition in the state, submit fingerprints, have a background check and have a hearing before a judge. If the judge signed an order, the name change would be official.

Sugarpova, a premium line of gummy candies and gum, has caught on quickly since she introduced it last year. In its first year, the company sold 1.8 million bags of its candy around the world in North America, Europe and Asia with planned launches in South America later this year. She is also extending the brand this fall by selling pendants, purses and other accessories with the company's lips logo on them.

Listen to these 2 talk about it:

RE: Maria Sharapova to change her name to Maria Sugarpova for the US Open

The U.S. Open is a fortnight to focus on your game, not your brand. Sharapova's name was built by understanding that distinction and that's where the force of her focus should be, writes Jane McManus.

Because an actual publicity stunt like that is beneath her. Sharapova has won majors and is one of the top tennis players in the world. It's not as if she is trying to establish herself and needs a publicity bump. She's not Norma Jean changing her name to Marilyn to earn her big break. Sharapova's name means something -- persistence and a will of steel, a single-mindedness than is both off-putting and admirable.

What is Sugarpova? It's the definition of selling out.

Sharapova launched a premium line of gummy candies and gum last year under the name Sugarpova; the product name is a cute play on words -- for the product. Changing her name to promote her product line makes me want to brush my teeth -- and does nothing for Sharapova, the person. Besides, she is already one of the most sought-after athletes when it comes to endorsements.

Could you imagine if other high-level professional athletes followed a similar path? Are we ready for "Roger Federal Express" or "Serena Williams-Sonoma" or "LeBron Jeans"?

Of course not.

Sharapova had apparently challenged her team to come up with outside-the-box ideas to promote the candy. It's easy to imagine a conference room full of "yes" men and women sampling gumdrops and lollipops and nodding heartily at the idea of a name change before walking out to disapproving stares. And this is the latest in a string of blips on the media radar -- last week, Sharapova lost to Sloane Stephens in the second round of the Western & Southern Open and subsequently cut ties with new coach Jimmy Connors.

Whatever the reason I am glad that she has dropped the issue of changing her name in order to advertise her candy. We can now concentrate on tennis.

RE: Maria Sharapova to change her name to Maria Sugarpova for the US Open

For such an accomplished hardcourt performer, Sharapova's recent showings in New York are mixed; since lifting the title in 2006, she has made it beyond the last 16 on just one occasion - a semifinal defeat to Victoria Azarenka 12 months ago.

Despite her recent struggles, the 26-year-old realizes that a major overhaul of her game is not necessary. Indeed, after Serena Williams, Sharapova can lay claim to being 2013's outstanding performer - prior to Wimbledon she had reached the semifinals or better at every tournament, going on to lift the title in Indian Wells and Stuttgart.

"At this stage of my career, I just want to improve on the game that I have," Sharapova said after her loss to Stephens. "At the level that I play at and the opponents that I compete against, it's always the little percentages that count and I'm always looking to improve by a little bit.

"It's not about changing something drastically, it's just about improving what you're good at and what makes you a champion and keep going and moving forward."

That girl is so dilusional she needs to overhaul her entire game starting with the serve, and adding more variety. Her game needs a ton of work.
