Thiem making the mistake of playing this week. He is a top 8 seed at RG and he should not be playing in tourneys in the week before RG. Instead he should strategize and work out the grooves in his game in private in the week before.

Chung and Monfils should also be resting. The former because he recently had an injury. The latter because he’s been chronically injured and the chance of sustaining another isn’t insignificant.

Monfils will rest starting today because he lost his opener to Marterer

He is young and feels he’s invincible

Couple of years ago he signed up for a lot of tourneys when he was ranked low. Then he was climbing up. At that time he had no choice. He was forced to play them to keep his word. But, now he should know better. When you are a top 8 seed and the only player to beat dirt devil, you should make sure that your prospects at RG are good by not playing in this tourney.

p.s. Now that he has done this, I doubt he will even live to face Rafa at RG.

Possibly, but he's had his least-heavy schedule of his last few going into RG. Maybe he'll bail out early on Lyon after he's gotten in some more match play.

I don't see Chung in the draw anymore. Possibly he was at position 23 and received Bye in the first round.
I guess Chung withdrew late in the tourney, and there was no time to find an LL to replace him. Or maybe no LL was available anymore because all Q losers went home and didn't want to come back.
So now we have an interesting situation: Byes at both positions 23 & 24, which means Giles Simon who advanced from position 21 by beating a qualifier, now is facing a Bye in round2 !!!
I guess it's not an unprecedented situation on the tour, but it's so rare that I don't even know if we have rules in place to deal with it. Will Giles' win with a "Bye" count as such in his ATP record? What happens if he loses in the third? would he receive prize money and points for 3 round, or for 2nd round only?

This is strange indeed. I can't remember the last time it happened.

Usually, when this happens if he loses the third round, he will only get the points and prize money for reaching 2nd round.

However, if he wins the third round, he will get the prize money and points that is corresponding to the last round he won in the tourney.

There is still a small chance they find someone to replace Chung and face Simon but it's already Wed almost 5am in Lyon so I very much doubt so.
It's worth adding that facing a "Bye" appears to be different situation than facing a real opponent who becomes unfit in the middle of tourney, therefore you receive a win by walkover. WO win does count in your record. And you receive money and points for it, even if you lose in the immediate next.

Interestingly, Kyrgios entered the doubles event teaming up with Sock, but he does not play singles.
He was missing in action since Houston, so basically almost the whole clay season.

De Loore replaced Chung who will likely withdraw from FO.

That made my above prediction wrong and the weirdo of facing a Bye by Simon, fixed. Maybe it's not that hard to find an LL, even at the last minute.
But Chung's injury preventing him from RG is a very sad outcome. Earlier, I was pointing to Chung as a quiet but serious contender to the ultimate feat: beat Rafa on clay. Won't happen and I'm worried what's going on with young Korean if anyone can shed some light.

Brat has always been saying he likes team sports better than individual. Maybe his on-court antics are frustration that he has do deal alone with mental pressure, and he cannot. He was doing good, and saying he was feeling good in OZ Davis Cup matches, as well as in Laver Cup matches. So it does not even matter whoever is in the team as long as he supports him on the court.
Eventually, brat should become doubles specialist. Money will be smaller, or maybe not if he finds someone to become no1 team like Bryans rather than hanging around no20 in singles as he does. But overall much better situation than accumulating frustration that he cannot deal with, and facing fines/career disruptions for his antics.

Chung’s ankle injury is serious enough to consider surgery. This is career threatening. Very sad news for his fans.
