Let me ask a typical American question. Do Japanese people live inside matchboxes?
What is the average size of the home of a middle income family?

The answers varies and where you live. If you live in Tokyo, apartments are very small and there are many one room apartments where it is very cramped. Rent is so high there. I've heard for a one-room apartment it's maybe $1500 a month. Maybe more.

As for a middle income family, i guess I could tell you about my place. Where I live, down south in the country, it's much more affordable. We bought our home ten years ago. You can get homes for the same size around 200k or higher, depending on location and other things. Our house sits on 210 square meters, which is a typical sized lot. Our house has four bedrooms, a living room-kitchen and a bathroom up and downstairs. We have a very small garden and parking for two cars. It's small but I've found it very liberating in that I don't have to spend all my time off cleaning up/taking care of the dang yard and inside the house. It helps us not accumulate things we don't need. It's small and when we bought the place I had my doubts but it has been a great decision for us. Compared to American homes, the houses are much smaller but as I have discovered smaller is sometimes much better!

Oh yes, definitely small is better. Less time cleaning, Less utility bill, Less unnecessary accumulation etc. But, I find the size of your house to be quite reasonable though.

I really enjoyed catching up on this thread Kirijax! It's strange how living near one type of disaster seems normal, but others unimaginable. I grew up in Tornado Alley and have lived in coastal areas with significant hurricanes in the last 30 years (I live in New Orleans now), but living near a volcano seems crazy!

Have you ever been to Tokyo? If so, what did you think?

Crowded. Lots to do and see. It was fun but definitely wouldn't want to live there. If you want to see modern Japan, it's the place to go. For more traditional Japan, Kyoto is the place.

For Tokyo,

Sky Tree
Tokyo Disneyland
Shibuya
Akihabara
Tokyo Tower
Meiji Jingu Shrine
Sumo Wrestling
Lots more. So much to see there.
