RE: [Blog] Masterclass Match of the Day - Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Lleyton Hewitt

Yes, well it has been an interesting match tactically so far, if not from an execution standpoint.

Del Potro does take the 3rd set,and it's going to be tough for Hewitt now. But he has to look at the positives. He serves first and can put scoreboard pressure on Del Potro. Juan Martin has to be pretty happy now. He had a danger point in the 3rd set, where he got a bit lucky with a net cord that dropped dead, and then hit the back line on his next point to prevent him from being broken. But once he came through that, he was zeroed in and snatched the set.

Hewitt didn't take his big chance in the second and he knew it, which caused a drop of level at the start of the 3rd.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Hewitt breaks. Great passing shot at deuce. Let's see if he can hold his nerve and take this to 5.

Well, a bit less tight this time, but same result. Del Potro came up with some great shots to break and Hewitt couldn't match him.

And in the 4th set tiebreak, it's Juan Martin's turn to get tight on his serve. Hewitt up 6-0.

5th set coming.

Seriously, how many times does Del Potro is using the slice backhand in this match? Is his wrist broken or something? I haven't see him hit back to back normal backhand in the whole match. Also, this match feels SO long.

Good post. I can't help but feel that the gap between the two is significantly larger than you imply, at least all things being equal and health on both accounts. Del Potro is arguably the best player in the game after the Big Three + One, or at least right there with David Ferrer and, I think, ahead of Tsonga and Berdych. Hewitt can still play well for a match or two, but in some ways he reminds me of Juan Carlos Ferrero: a remnant of a lighter-hitting era that just can't keep up with the hard hitters that dominate the game today. Ultimately I don't think he's any better than a top 40 player at this point.

like the stats you bring but often your opinion is way off the mark, and needs a reality check. Watching Hewitt play these days, should easily show that it's not lighter-hitting that 'just cannot keep up' - that's just bogus shallow way of looking at things skin-deep. Looking at Hewitt vs Delpo, it almost looks as though they are very evenly matched; Hewitt is not swept away by "hard-hitting" like how some fans like mouth off right? in fact he even looks like the better player at most times, the match would've been over in 4 with a bit of luck for Hewitt.

Look everyone knows Hewitt can't beat player with the weight of his shot, that's never been the case - not in what you deemed the 'weak era' or the current era. But what he does would work in any era, superb timing (which opens up the court and doesn't allow opponent to get set and hit big), great anticipation and movement (anticipation makes his movement look even better), some of the best passing shots you can find (which has always been his trademark), consistency and of course one of the best mental fortitude the game's seen.

It's not even the first time he's looked evenly matched against the top players of this era, only in Olympics he gave Djoker a great battle. Don't tell me they just play badly against him, because Hewitt himself is not nearly the player he was, not even close to his peak - physically he cannot be after multiple surgeries and mentally, when was the last time he choked like he did when closing out the second set for a 2 set lead against Delpo? mind you, he was up 2 set points serving for it.

of course the agenda driven bs would naturally flow. they never play well unless they run over the little guy. The little guy is simply supposed to get squashed how dare he even tries to beat the big boys? how dare he even puts in any resistance? :D

Hewitt up 5-1 in the final set. With all due respect to Lleyton who is playing with a lot of grit, heart and spirit, this is just poor and flat out disappointing from Del Potro. He's in the peak of his career, just coming off a phenomenal performance in Wimbledon and now he's about to get blown away in the final set of the 2nd round of his favorit Grand Slam. I don't know whether he suffers any physical problems right now or is he just mentally not strong enough whenever he enters a slam as one of the top dogs with people expecting a deep run? Anyway, it's a big loss for the tournament. The upper half is now basically done.

70 unforced errors for Delpo.
