Roger enjoying the crowd, he is all smiles now...

He has to. This might be his last ever title on clay.

The interviewer asks" Your last red clay win was RG, what do you think?" and I am like, really? Has it been that long?

No it was not. that is incorrect.
Madrid 2012 was the last one

He won Madrid in 2012, but I guess the interviewer isn't counting the blue clay year.

Maybe he can defend his title here next year?;)

Are they that rich to spend one more time as much to invite him?

The emphasis on the question was on the word "red" ;)

I see. In that case, it was RG

Haven't you seen the crowd, all the Roger love, everything sold out and stuff...and the sponsors are two banks. They have money :snicker

I doubt he will play in Istanbul again next year. You got to remember that the money that he got paid here was some ridiculous amount (recall that the deal almost fell and then it succeeded).
But, I do think Roger will continue to keep playing a small 250 event on clay to get his clay feet without having to face big boys. It could be Istanbul too if they can outbid other tourneys.
Whoever pays more among Istanbul, Munich, Estoril and Bucharest will win out Roger. He has
already played in Estroil and so I doubt they would be willing to pay huge amounts. So, I think next year may be Bucharest's chance to indulge Roger's new found Tourism Apetite. :snicker

Even though Roger had to struggle in each of his last three matches in Istanbul, I think it is a overall positive week for him. All these struggles would definitely make him a better player
the rest of the clay season. All in all, I think it is a great move by him to play in an ATP 250 clay this year.

I expect Roger to go out early in Madrid (on or before QF, no Fedal match). I also expect
Roger to play in Rome (ditching his idea of skipping Rome) in view of early exit in Madrid.
Finally, I expect Roger to go deep in Rome. All in all it would be a good prep for RG, not too
long and arduous and not skimpy either. While nobody expects him to really win RG, this
preparation would be ideal to capitalize at RG in case an opportunity presents itself. Life
is about being ready to take it when the opportunity presents.

GSM, I agree with what you are saying in that even though this was not a great showing for Roger, he found a way to win against 3 good clay court players. There are positives, that's for sure.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Apart from Djokovic, I don't see no one that would breeze through that field.

The positive thing, apart from wining, which is always positive to begin with, is that Federer grinded the wins. That's a new trick for an old dog. The forehand he can always fix it somehow, as think he nows a thing or two about forehands...
