Is She?

No. 2 Victoria Azarenka believes she’s closing the gap on 17-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.

“Serena is playing the best tennis of her life and so am I,” Azarenka told AFP. “It’s been really noticeable the gap from last year we have in the matches has minimized. I’ve beaten her twice this year. No one else has done that. It’s just exciting to be in the era of somebody and competing with somebody who is considered the best ever and being their toughest opponent.”

Not yet. Vika won those matches because Serena got tight and didn't close her out. Victoria has to get that serve in order if she wants to be on the same level w/ Serena right now.

Until she can beat Serena at a major, it isn't narrowing. I think the only major Azarenka might be able to edge Serena out at at the moment is Australia as Azarenka has found her groove there, but I don't even tip it in her favor that much. As for the other majors, they swing all the way in Serena's favor.

Serena gives these players false hope..:snigger...remember how she would lose to Dementieva at Wta events and schooled her at Slams.Serena toys with these players all the time and has long memory...she really knows how to avenge.:clap
13-3 is not closing any gap...its like when Roddick was losing to Roger at Grand Slams.

Not at all, I didn't realize that thank you for bringing it to my attention. She hasn't won it in 3 years, and it seems Azarenka has picked up the slack there and won it. I didn't say Azarenka would win against Serena, but I could imagine Serena getting the most fight from Azarenka there as she does seem to love it down there.

Yes she loves it down there by winning it twice and Serena loves it even more by winning it 5 times....just saying.

I think she is right. She has narrowed the gap. The question is - is it enough to win at GS? Well, it's not impossible.

Since making that comment, Azarenka has had to "first round" losses. Yes, one was a 2nd round loss due to her receiving a bye.

Seems as if Pova is "closing the gap" on Azarenka, without even playing

They are 2-2 this season. That's much better than any previous seasons.

It really is hard to say. True they split this season, but Serena won where it mattered. I also have to say it was actually quite disappointing that Azarenka clawed her way back in the 2nd set only to collapse in set 3. This is hardware you fight tooth and nail to win it. She had no fight in her whatsoever that 3rd set.

While I agree she has done better this season winning against Serena than any other season, the gap is still not closing. That serve has become a liability and where she was getting away with poor play the last couple of months, it's starting to catch up with her now. She may be too focused on beating Serena and neglecting other players and parts of her game that really need work.

I agree with you Hawkeye, at 2-2 for the year, there isn't much of a gap, not record-wise!
I think the gap is in Vika's head!

Clearly there is a gap. Serena is still the better player. This has been twisted into misleading by the media anyway. What she actually says is I've closed the gap in our matches this year. That is undeniable fact. Last year she won 1 set in 5 matches. This year she's won 2 matches and 5 sets in 4 matches.

Yep Serena knocked the fight out of her.

1) Williams 13260
2) Azarenka 8485

?!?!?!

That's almost a 5000 point gap between the number 1 ranked player and the number 2 .

Does anyone know if 4775 points spread between 1 and 2 a record?
