Kyrgios has the ability to hit the hell out of the ball, mixed with good touch and super athleticism. With better fitness and a maturing mindset, there is a huge upside to this guy.

Yep, Kyrgios ceiling is as high as he thinks it is.
If he can get through Nadal today, Djokovic has a tough out against Bellucci later. Nick could be in good stead for the quarter. Thiem knocking out Fed?? Hell, this could be a young gun takeover this week. Easier said than done. o_O

The young guns have definitely begun making a statement this year. Kyrgios took that slap upside the head last summer and calmed himself, to good effect. I like him, though I will like him less today until Rafa beats him. :)

I think next year might be the real coming of age for the younger mob, but they are laying down markers for sure. I thought Thiem might beat Fed... I think we'll see some scalps this year, but next year will be the real Apache raid... and I'm looking forward to it.

Thiem seems to be the better player mentally. Nick's brain may always be his biggest obstacle, but maybe not to the same degree as someone like Monfils. 3-4 here and Kyrgios had opportunities to be more present in Nadal's last service game than he was.

As an aside, anyone else have trouble watching tennis on clay when the sun's shining?

Annacone just called Kyrgios the best (young) spot server since Sampras. Pretty high praise.

His arm is crazy-live, but sometimes he's not so much with the footwork.

Footwork is lazy. Maybe a good coach will help with that? Really there has to be the commitment from him; one to see that he needs it and two, the discipline to work on it.

I'm not sure how much you can improve footwork at this stage, but it might be focus, too. He gets so oddly casual sometimes.

While proper footwork is ingrained early on, it's still something that can be improved with good coaching and the commitment to work at it. Yes, focus; he seems to lose the plot at very odd moments.

As we go into the tiebreak, this will be a good tell to see how fully back Nadal is. Will he get nervy and miss or step it up and go for his shots.

Rafa played a pretty solid tiebreak, right up to that double fault there. Nick finishes strong with a beautiful inside out forehand. Vamos!
