The Venue:

Under the watch of Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle (a huge Database company) and one of the world's richest men, Indian Wells has firmly established itself as one of the world's elite tennis venues. The views might not match those of Monte Carlo, but the facilities are state of the art.

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden boasts the second largest tennis stadium in the world with Stadium 1 housing over 16,000 fans and 44 suites. Only Flushing Meadows can boast a higher capacity.

Since the above aerial shot was taken Stadium 2 has been added to the Tennis Garden (housing an additional 8,000 spectators)

The venue is situated near Palm Springs, California, in the Coachella Valley and has also played host to various touring bands such as The Who and Andrea Bocelli. It has also hosted NBA pre-season games.

The Players:

The spotlight will be on Serena Williams' return to the pro tour. Her sabbatical from the women’s tour will come to an end as she prepares for her first tour match in 14 months at Indian Wells.

The last time Williams set foot on the court for a competitive tour match was January 2017, where she completed a successful Australian Open campaign in Melbourne to net her 23rd Grand Slam title.

A well-stocked field awaits Williams in Indian Wells. Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki, world number one Simona Halep... unlike the men's tour, the ladies are not in the midst of an injury crisis.

Defending champion Elina Vesnina, in-form Angelique Kerber and Garbiñe Muguruza are other contenders in a deep field.

I was watching scoreboard...Sabine was losing the first set. I see she lost the second as well. Schiavone lost too. There was quite a few recognizable names in the qualifying draw, like Petko!

Vera Z won!

Yeah, the qualies have some decent names in there. Errani will get a decent shunt up the rankings. Taylor Townsend beat Broady

Probably Simona. Caroline has more points to defend for the Sunshine Double.
