The first mandatory event of the year

Tournament Info
Tier: Premier, Prize Money: $6,993,450, Surface: Hard, Director: Tommy Haas
Total Financial Commitment: $6,157,160. The BNP Paribas Open is the most attended tennis event in the world outside of the four Grand Slams. Since 2000, it has been held at the state-of-the-art Indian Wells Tennis Garden, which features a 16,100-seat stadium - the second-largest in the world. The venue sits in the Coachella Valley, known for its 354 days of sunshine a year, making it a perfect setting for professional tennis.

2017-stadium.ashx

Debuting as a men's event in 1976, the women came to Indian Wells the week before the men in 1989 and then concurrently in 1996. Now held just before Miami's Sony Open Tennis in March, the two-week event has evolved into a 'Premier Mandatory', making it one of the WTA calendar's four most prestigious stops.

Among Indian Wells' many accolades are being named the WTA's Premier Tournament Of The Year five times - in 1997, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2013 - and the Premier Mandatory Tournament Of The Year in 2014; becoming the first event in the world to offer the Hawk-Eye challenge system on every match court in 2011; and becoming the first ATP/WTA combined tournament to distribute $1 million in prize money to each of its singles champions in 2012.

Indian Wells champions include WTA legends Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles, and more recently 21st century superstars Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki. Lisa Raymond has the tournament doubles record with seven titles.

Draw not available yet - qualifying has started today - 48 qualifiers playing about 12 places in the maindraw

Previous 6 years champions
2016 Victoria Azarenka
2015 Simona Halep
2014 Flavia Pennetta
2013 Maria Sharapova
2012 Victoria Azarenka
2011 Caroline Wozniacki

Victoria Azarenka will loose 2000 points as she won the "Sunshine Double" last year.

Not a good draw for Kerbie. Coco, Halep, Cibby and Kasatkina all her on side (players who have beaten her in the last 6 months). The only ones missing from this list are Svitolina and Puig who are on Serena's side.

Serena withdraws from IW

Serena's withdrawal means Angelique Kerber will reclaim the #1 ranking after Indian Wells.

.@SerenaWilliams has withdrawn from @BNPParibasOpen and @MiamiOpen with a left knee injury.

They must rebalance the draw now. They cannot just put a lucky loser in Serena's spot.

Looking a little better for Kerbie as Kasatkina and Cibby move to the other side w/ the reshuffling. But still has Venus, Woz, Halep, returning Keys and a struggling Aga on her side. It'll be interesting to see how she plays knowing she'll get the #1 ranking back. She didn't play particularly well when she had it before.

I don't think Genie will ever regain the form that took her to top 5 a few years ago. I watched some of the match w/ Beck and she just has no confidence in her game. Her return is which was a potent weapon is almost non-existent. This girl was serving major powder puffs and Genie could not get enough returns in play to capitalize. :cover

Tossip may have called this one too if I recall..sometimes it appears some of these ladies want to be the next That Girl (Sharapova type of endorsements) instead of a warrior. Maybe that's what made Henin such a great player, she knew she didn't have Wall Street marketability looks. I didn't care too much for her as a person but as a player..she competed.

It was sad to watch Taylor Townsend play yesterday. Listening to the analyst trying their best to be poc about her obviously lack of conditioning...I don't understand when it's your job, your livelihood to be as physically and mentally prepared as possible..

Couple of seeds knocked out on Fri. Kasatkina and Lucic Baroni. Some interesting matches on Sat. Venus/JJ, Coco/Lucie.
