If Federer wins the 2015 US Open, should he retire, surely, as the Greatest Of All Time?

Sampras has the distinction of being an icon whose very last match was a grand slam final win. Not a bad way to go.

But, bloody hell, is it me, or is he playing out of his mind this week?

Independent of whether he wins the USO or not, Fed had promised not to retire anytime before 2016 Olympics. So, I don't see it happening.

If Fed wins USO 2015, he might come out and declare categorically that he will retire at the end of 2016 season. Note that so far he has never said he will retire after 2016 Olympics. He had only said, he will not retire before that.

Good points..but I don't think Sampras indented to retire after winning the 2002 U S Open. I was on a flight with Paul Annacone right after and he said Sampras was trying new rackets and getting ready for the AO. He never played another match.

But he figured his ship had come in. The reality that Fed's last slam was
2012 and his odds will decline.

Not happening. Fed wants another Wimbledon badly and is also itching for another crack at a singles gold medal. I think he will play until he feels he has next to no chance to win a slam.

I guess the number of sports legends who have retired at a bigh point are rare...Sampras, and others like Rocky Marciano, Marvin Hagler was one fight away! Mayweather may be next.

It is usually on the way down.

I can see why we would want to compare, but Sampras was clearly on the way down and hadn't won anything for over two years when he has that flash of brilliance and some luck in getting Agassi in the final. Federer is still winning tournaments, in the top three in the world, has been in the last two Wimbledon finals and if Djokovic would trip up somewhere, could very easily win a couple more Slams before he really starts to go downhill. There is no way he would retire even if he won the USO, if he is still winning like he is. And Wimbledon is the tournament that defines him so I see his last match happening there.

I think its better not talk about retirement of any players of any game. Its would be a very hard moment for any player of any game or profession to retire from what they love. If we think he will retire after winning a grand slam its totally wrong. If that's true he would have retired some 3 or 4 years back itself. Because he had nothing to prove as he was way ahead of everyone in the tennis history. Legends never get a feeling that they are done unless there is some external force to make them retire. They keep fighting till the end for what they love. So let's not be the force to push him out of the game.. :)

I think that if he wins the US Open this year, he may become more confident and try to win two more to end with 20, which is a good number.

As much I would like to think that TF has such an impact, there is zero chance of what tennis fans are saying about his retirement influencing Federer into making such a decision.

He will retire when Mirka says it's ok to retire.

He won't win USO so this poll is quite "strange"....

I like the optimism but this is the ATP and not the WTA. Can't see a 34 year old winning 3 more slams ;) Winning just 1 more would be mighty impressive.

I can't see Roger winning anymore slams, regardless of how well he's been playing this year, including reaching the Wimbledon final.

Nevertheless, I don't think he should retire, nor do I think he will retire in the next couple of years.

Let's do a bet Tented! If Federer wins one more, you send me a box full of Jolly Ranchers! If Federer retires without winning one, I'll send you a box full of squid jerky! The kind with the tentacles still attached! :snicker

Send me your address, and I'll send you the Jolly Ranchers. No betting -- and certainly no squid jerky -- required.

I am sure he wants another Wimby, and the Gold Medal is something he has dreamed of, but at one point does he become a realist? He has his last best shot at winning the Big W this year IMO.

Nobody is forcing him out of the game..but what a way to go..win your 18th slam and see ya...

Retirement talk has come up for every single player over 30 who has won a slam or has been # 1.

Roddick and Bartoli shocked everyone by preempting the discussion.

Aside from a weak as hell final he played better at this year's Wimbledon than last year. I think he will have a decent chance at Wimbledon 2016. That and the USO this year and next are the last realistic chances even if they aren't good odds.
