The Tournament

The Bitpanda Hamburg Open is one of the most historic and respected clay-court tournaments on the ATP Tour. As one of the 16 ATP 500 events on the calendar, it attracts a strong 32-player singles field and 16 doubles teams to northern Germany each summer.

The tournament is staged at the iconic Rothenbaum Tennis Center, located in the heart of the city. The centre court is one of the largest clay-court stadiums in Germany and features a retractable roof, ensuring world-class conditions regardless of the weather. The venue blends tradition with modern upgrades, maintaining a classic European clay-court atmosphere while offering contemporary facilities for players and fans alike.

Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city and a vibrant maritime metropolis defined by water, trade, and culture. Situated on the River Elbe, with access to the North Sea, the city has long been one of Europe’s most important ports leaving a legacy that continues to shape its cosmopolitan character.

Hamburg is known for its striking waterfront architecture, particularly the modern Elbphilharmonie concert hall, which rises above the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district - now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city’s layout is shaped by canals, lakes, and green spaces, including the scenic Alster Lakes at its centre, giving it a spacious and open feel.

Balancing industrial heritage with cultural sophistication, Hamburg boasts a thriving arts scene, renowned theatres, and a lively nightlife district around St. Pauli. During tournament week, the city’s refined yet energetic atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for world-class clay-court tennis.

I cant believe that Alex who struggles on clay, has defeated one of the most dangerous players on clay in Francisco Cerundolo?
Quite frankly Alex has spent soo much time in Spain, you would think he could do better on clay, his defense game is solid and he is a good mover, a much needed win for de Minaur on clay

Good God Cobolli defending champion goes out in straight sets to Q Buse, though may I say can Buse play on the clay 62 75
Another top seed bites the dust, Shelton No 2 goes out in 3 sets to Altmaier 46 76 (4) 64
Shelton try to get some form before RG, he lost in his first round matches at Masters Madrid and also Roma

Ben has probably already overperformed this year on clay in winning Munich. I don't suspect he'll do much more. Maybe get to R3 at RG. Cobolli and Dangerous going out are a bit more surprising. I think it's mental w/ them. I've seen Dangerous play lights out for a set and half and then meekly go away for the rest of the match.

Keli,
I watched his matches in Masters 1000 Madrid and Rome, it is the 'same old same old with Ben' his rally tollerance is poor and his return game has not improved, sometimes his shot selection does my head in, no improvement in those areas, he does the same on other surfaces just not clay cant keep making excuses for him because he is an American on clay
If Americans want to improve on clay there are plenty of lower grade clay tournaments they can play in Europe to improve their clay game.
