Soderling over Nadal was the biggest one ever. I thought Safin d. Federer in SF AO '05 was quality AND a pretty big upset.

Safin beating Federer didn't look that much of an upset. Technically, Safin was an excellent tennis player and he was playing well at that AO. Many people thought he was a headcase who was wasting his talent.

Probably fair enough. Safin had also had reasonable results at the AO prior.

To me, Fedalovic (maybe add Murray there too) can never have an upset among themselves. I am talking after they established themselves as greats, not the first years. They are just too good and can come up with the goods even when they have a bad stretch.
Nadal losing on grass early, again I find it a bit difficult to see as an upset. That's just me though.
A great upset is when a person has no business beating Roger on grass or Rafa on clay pulls it off. Soderling, Tsonga, Anderson , etc...
Also going back, Sampras losing to Bastl at Wimbledon in the second round. Yeah he was getting up there in age but he still won the US Open that year so he had no business losing to someone ranked 150 or something.

It amuses me that I remember some names just because of a single match.

Peter Doohan
Lukas Rosol
Stakhovsky
Joachim Johansson
Dustin Brown

They attain tennis immortality by winning one match and then disappear. But I had to look up the names of Kafelnikov and Tom Johansson who both won grand slam tournaments. :)

But, you got to count the first early loss of Nadal as an upset. After all he won twice and been to the finals five times. The later ones did not have shock value and so they can be omitted.

Peter Doohan second round upset of Boris Becker 1987 Wimbledon would be the greatest upset in the Grand Slams.

He was not quite unknown. I think he was the winner of under 21 tournament before that.
True, but I remember only Moxie and may be Herios knew about him on these forums. At AO, commentators were always reminding people that he had won the next generation tournament in MIlan the previous year because few people paid attention to that tournament. So not that much known either.

Not true. I have been posting about him since the us open 2016. There is a search function on this site, he has been quite widely discussed on these boards.
