The great thing about matches involving Nadal is that besides their stunning level of play, they are also very eye candy due to his unlimited physical beauty. :good: It's like 2 birds with 1 stone!

In terms of quality only, Wimbledon's 2004 final.

In terms of quality: 2011 US Open final. 2013 us open was good too, as was the 2009 one.

I can’t vote for these though, so I’ll go with 2012 Australian open. The 2008 Wimbledon final is a bit cliché but also a worthy pick in my view.

2012 AO final went to five sets and is (I believe) the longest GS final. However, it surely is not the greatest match. It is merely a war of attrition. Many folks (except us die hard tennis fans), actually stopped watching it after some time. A greatest match should have the quality of forcing the viewers attention and make them glued to the TV. 2012 AO final is simply not one of those matches.

Agreed, it was quantity over quality...the clueless might buy into the hype because of the duration but let’s get real, the rallies were consistently long because neither has enough offensive ability to finish the points. If in doubt just ask Fed, Wawrinka (when he is on) how to play offence. Attrition wise yes, they covered enough mileage to be in the record books.

You can add it, if you can make a case for it. I'd put it on the short list for "greatest upsets of all time," but I'm not sure it rises to the level of GOAT matches.

I was joking, Moxie.

Could have used an emoticon, then, perhaps. ;) Rather contentious match. And I'm not talking about the Nadal fans. At least we're sanguine about it. :D

Which 4th Rounder at the 2009 French Open? Federer-Haas wasn't bad. It may have included the most important point in tennis history. If we want to look far back what about 1972 Laver over Rosewall 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-7 7-6 in WTC Finals. Personally, I think W2008, but AO2017, and US2011 SF were greats too.

Ya, that inside out forehand that Fed hit against Haas (when Fed was down a set and would be down a break if he did not win that point) was really amazing. I still have vivid memory of it as I was very tense when I was watching it live.

Actually he was down 2 sets and it was 4-4 in the 3rd I believe when he hit that get out of jail shot.

Why is a masters semi between fed and kyrgios on this list? Who even saw that match.

There are a ton of matches that have been more significant. For one, Stan Wawrinka’s win over Djokovic in the FO final of 2015. The level he reached that day was insane. In terms of quality and moment should def be above many of the matches listed here.

That list was never meant to be more than a conversation opener, which I think I said in the OP. I put a recent one on that was 3 sets, as a talking point. It was an exciting match. Most don't think that 3-setters qualify. Part of the point was to elicit that from people, as an opinion. I'm perfectly happy if you think that Wawrinka d. Djokovic is better. Noting, that it's a Bo5. Part of the point of the examples. Bo3 don't seem to make the grade for most people.

I know, I am just arguing against that match and arguing for another.

As a Novak fanboy, you can only speak for yourself. Those who did watch could only marvel at the shot making from both at the highest level, much unlike those endless counter punching rallies that go on forever where neither player is offensive enough. FO 2015 was a good example, Stan beat him with extraordinary shot making when Novak was having his second best run of his career. Actually in Novak’s best run (2011) Fed also beat him with insane shot making at FO.

True that. Both those AO encounters were thrillers, it’s a great matchup.
