So Thiem doesn't have to play until Wednesday. That helps.

I have a question to johnsteinbeck, I hope he is around.
Can you tell us some details about Dennis Novak, the Austrian WC ranked 272, who eliminated today Bedene ?

or you're lucky and he'll check in here (originally hoping for a little more hype about Thiem! Bamos!)...

his win was a surprise around here as well. i don't know a whole lot about him - even though he's actually from my area (as in, 15 miles from my home).
he is 21. this is his first atp tour main draw win, and just the second time he's ever played on the ATP level, both times relying on WC to get into Kitzbuehel. if it were injuries or early troubles that held him back despite a strong talent, i probably should have heard of him.

i know they bloom late these days, but there's really not a lot of potential visible. so long story short: i'm almost positive that this will be a one-off win against an also-ran. don't expect to hear a lot from him again. (but of course it'd be wonderful if we did).

Thanks. I was going to PM you today, last night I got sidetracked.
I saw that Novak is from Wiener Neustadt and assumed you might have some inside track.
You are right, is not a lot on his resume and I would be shocked to see him progress any further this week as he meets F3 next.

About Thiem, I usually stay away of hyping the new guard, but let me tell you I am really impressed of what series of wins he just put together lately.
He is knocking on the door of the top 20, and if he plays well this week he will burst into it.
I am really happy for him and you of course;)

On the same topic, injuries, Bolelli dropped out of the event before it started, because of appendicitis.
His place was taken by lucky loser Montanes.

An interesting test for Thiem today: playing a countryman, in Austria, after winning two titles in as many weeks. Their h2h is 1-0, with Dominic winning their only encounter just two weeks ago in Umag.

Ouch. Thiem lost the opening set to Haider-Maurer 1-6.
Let's see what he can do now, on serve in the second.

That was a close one. Fatigue? Pressure of playing in front of a home crowd? The pressure of being a top seed? All of the above? But he still won. Thiem is really starting to impress me.

Qualifier Paul Henri Mathieu makes the SF dfeating today Delbonis in 3 sets:

6-3, 0-6, 6-3.
Strange result, but good for the veteran
