Slightly off topic. It's no secret that Becker never was in love with Federer. Given that Sampras stays out of the limelight, Becker along with McEnroe were the most loved champions for a long time at Wimbledon. Federer changed all that and turned Becker into another past gentleman's champion almost overnight. It does look like Becker gets the last laugh. I have always felt that what makes the Novak-Boris partnership tick is a shared hunger to bring down Federer's status in tennis royalty. Is it a coincidence that Novak won two Wimbledons that too beating Federer in the final within 18 months of pairing up with Becker? Now with the most dominant run in men's Tennis history, it seems plausible that Djokovic is on autopilot to eclipsing Federer in Tennis history itself. Tennis can change fast it appears that way right now.

Yes, but that doe snot mean much (as he can update it anytime). If he is not even considering playing in Madrid, he would have told Madrid folks to take his name off from the entry list there. The fact that he did not do so means he is considering playing there a possibility. Of course, he can take his name off from the list anytime though.

The difference is that if you allow your name to be on the entry list and then take it off, that event will count as a 0 pointer for him. If he did not even allow his name to get on the entry list, that event will not be considered an event that he played in. Hence, he could therefore use another tourney, say ATP 250 tourney, in its place in the list of countable tournaments. In view of this, it is always a good idea to make sure that your name is not on the entry list at any point if you are 100% sure that you do not want to play in it.

Also, remember that for ATP 1000 mandatory events, players do not sign up to play in it. The entry lists are automatically formed six weeks before the tourney begins based on the rankings at that time. A player has to inform the organizers if he is not going to play despite qualifying due to high rankings.

Most dominant run in tennis history? :nono That would be Federer 2004-2007 by a country mile. And it's no coincidence Novak won 2 Wimbledons within 18 months of pairing up with Becker. He was a playing a 33 year old the first time and 34 year old the next time who is nothing like he was in his prime. That's the reason and nothing to do with Becker.

Wow. You are sounding exactly like the Sampras fans on tennis.com back in 08. Nole isn't even within 5 of Roger's slam take.

He may well retire with more than 17 but I'm just commenting on lob's remark that this is the most dominant run in tennis history. Federer was making monkeys out of everyone for 4 straight years from 2004-2007 so it's not even comparable right now.

Truly one of the most dominant runs ever, but Fed was also up against very weak competition back then! ;)

May be I was a bit swayed by this.

Maybe just a bit :p The most glaring stat that stands out there is the 2nd best guy on tour and Novak's only real competition the past few years is 34. 35 in August. And Stan once in a blue moon.

I don't think she'll win any slams this year personally. She could well be done but who knows.

Stan's blue moon days may be over. He hasn't shown much life or energy on the courts since he took up with Kokkinakis' leftovers.

The gap between Federer (when he dominated) and No. 2 was never as big as between Djokovic and Murray now.

That's 'cos he played much better players than Murray :p Prime Nadal. Not the guy we're seeing now.

Novak's last year and a half, going back to the Paris Masters in 2014, is the most dominant such run in Open Era history.

14 of 18 big tournaments (Slams, WTF, Masters). 6 in a row. Roger never did that. In fact, he never won more than 3 big tournaments in a row. Rafa's longest streak was 5, in 2010.

(And this isn't counting Miami, if he wins - which would make it 15 of 19 and 7 in a row).

That may be true if you take an year in isolation. I don't think Novak comes even close if you take a 4 year run in domination.

Who was Federer's main rival in 2004. Nadal? No. Roddick. And Murray is a better player than Roddick was in 2004.

Not in 2016 he's not. At his best yes but right now, no he's not.
