Federer posted pictures on his Facebook recently of him practicing on clay. Found it interesting that he's on clay ahead of the three indoor hard-court tournaments to close the year...before Davis Cup. What are some of your thoughts on this? I didn't think players like to switch surfaces more than they have to.

Guess he's getting some practice for the indoor clay for Davis Cup. He can play indoor tennis in his sleep and the whole French team in the DC final have way more time to practice than him on the indoor clay the DC finals will be on since none of them will be in the WTF.

I don't think it is boredom or fun. It is well calculated move as DC will be on indoor clay in France. Roger wants to make sure that he brings home the DC cup this year, as he may not get another chance to do so, for all he knows.

That's it: he's obviously getting an early feel for the indoor clay. I didn't know the French had chosen that surface, and it could be a mistake. Stan is the lame duck - but Switzerland will win both Fed's matches. Surely the French should choose a surface that suits them best for doubles - and the matches with Stan?

I know bro. My point was, even if it WAS for fun, it would not matter, he would still be OK for the indoor season. I am sure you are right about the DC prep.

The French has the duo of Julian Benneteau and Edward Roger-Vasselin. They are
an established doubles team and in fact they have qualified already for the WTF in
doubles. This duo actually won the men's doubles event at Rolland Garros this year
(and no other slam). So, I think the decision to use indoor clay is indeed a good
strategic decision on the part of France.

Federer's team announced he will also practice on clay during the week between Bercy and
WTF. They said, if he does not practice on clay, then he will be playing on clay in DC after
a full six months and they don't want that to happen.

Yup, he needs to practice 'cos not practicing enough in time is exactly what the French are hoping!

In all likelyhood, it will come down to Stan's matches. He needs to win one and the Swiss should be in pole position. Clay is Wawrinka's best surface, that will help him, but not sure if it will be enough to overcome his recent downfall in form.

I am also guessing that the French will start practicing way in advance and that will help them.

Another thing that can be read in between the lines here is that Fed is NOT going to skip
Bercy. If he plans to skip Bercy, he probably would not be practicing on clay before Basel.

I am too lazy to find the article to provide link. But, they (Fed's team) made a statement
that finishing as YE #1 is not Fed's priority, but if that happens they will consider it as a
bonus.
