Federer interview post Nadal match:

Q. I think we heard you tonight complaining to the umpire about Rafa's grunting. Was it worse than normal tonight? Do you find it distracting?

ROGER FEDERER: Not when he does it every point. But it goes in phases. One point he does and he doesn't. That's just what I was complaining about.

Had no impact on the outcome of the match, you know, but the level was the same.

Q. Have you complained before?

ROGER FEDERER: I have, yeah.

Q. Clearly it wasn't a difference in the result of the match, but the grunting and also the serial violating of the time rule that Rafa does, do you feel that umpires generally are too lenient with him? You seem to be waiting all the time.

ROGER FEDERER: Rafa is doing a much better job today than he used to. I mean, I'm not complaining much about the time. But I think I've played him, what, 33 or 34 times. He's gotten two point penalties over the course of our rivalry. I just think that's not quite happening. I mean, we know how much time he used to take.

I'm not complaining about so many things. But, I mean, either you have rules or you don't. If you don't have rules, it's fine. Everybody can do whatever they want to do.

I just think it's important to enforce the rules on many levels, whatever it may be. On all the players the same way. Don't give me or Djokovic a free pass just because of who we are.

I think we should all be judged the same way. Not just a guy on Court 16 because the guy had a brutal rally, you have to give him a time violation just because you can.

On center court, they're always going to be afraid, the umpires, to take those decisions. I just like to challenge them a little bit.

I don't want to go in the office and complain all the time. I never do. I just hope they do their job correctly. If they don't, what are you going to do? Sit and watch. Sometimes you just got to say things.

I didn't lose the match because of that. It didn't bother me. I just felt I had to mention something.

Well, what can I say, I guess nothing new here.
But it appears that Federer is more unhappy with the umpires than the rulebreakers.
Should the umpires get tougher and crack down on everybody?

Like it or not Fed is correct. I agree 100%. However, why would they enforce the rules today? The ATP has allowed certain individuals and their coaches to violate rules for years. Having worked for these people I know what I am talking about. No response necessary.

Just a couple of matches ago Nadal got: A warning for coaching. A warning for time violation. A second warning for time violation in which he lost a first serve on a crucial point.

Rules are definitely more enforced now than they were even a year ago.

Too little too late and they're still not enforcing it enough. They're still too cowardly to dock a point when the delay from first to second serve is too long. I imagine the delay when Ferrer decided to shove the linesman and walk off with a stupid grin on his face took more than 30 seconds and he didn't get anything.

I agree. It has gotten better but not enough still.

Again.. Much ado about Nothing! Maybe Roger watch the tape to see how he screams after every critical point he wins.

I didn't lose the match because of that. It didn't bother me. I just felt I had to mention something

If it didnt bother, then what are we talking about then Roger..

That's after the point is over and you seriously think Fed screams more than Rafa shouts vamos?! I think not.

You must have strange hearing if you think Federer makes more noise on court than Nadal.

Fair enough but a lot of that has to do with the fact that he knows his time is running out and every slam opportunity is narrowing by the day. If saving a break point emphatically keeps his chances alive of course he's gonna want to do something to perk himself up and frankly many other players would do exactly the same. The odd yell here or there is commonplace with any player

The umpiring is very inconsistent, but that is pretty much applicable to any sport. Still, Federer is 100% correct, but sometimes the aura of the stadium and the status of a player can really impact the way an umpire, well, umpires.

You're confusing two things. Federer yells AFTER the point is over -- in celebration. What Federer was complaining about is Nadal's grunts DURING the point (while hitting the ball).

With that said, and I know every Fed fan/Djokovic fan "liked" some of the above posts, but you're in denial if you think Nadal's grunts were anything excessive last night, or if you conveniently ignore that Roger complained about said grunts in the first game of the second set...right after losing the first. Hmmm, could it be that hew as just pissed about losing the first set and was venting some frustration?

Jake Garner's reply (the umpire) was perfect by the way: this is known, Roger.

And that was my thought exactly: Is it news that players, and Nadal in particular, grunt while smacking the ball? I wasn't aware this was against the rules.

As far as taking time in between points, Nadal wasn't really doing that in this particular match (probably because he didn't need to), and all you have to do is read Federer's answer for confirmation: "Rafa is doing much better."

In fairness, I don't really think he is doing much better on a match-to-match basis since he still takes up a lot of time, but that wasn't the case against Roger.

Youngderer should play vs Miss Azarenka, or Miss Larcher de Brito, or Miss Sharapova...

Those three should only be allowed play if gagged so no one has to put up with their ridiculous screeching.

They have played in doubles, but they stay pretty quiet out of respect to the Great Ones. ;)

Play starts around the 7 minute mark

I believe that this AO holds the record for most mini-controveries. Emphasis on MINI. How much do people really want to hamper players, and put their fates in the hands of the umpires? Or worse, the media? YOU try being alone out there for 3-5 hours.
