Fed probably played better in 2015 semi against Murray, too early to call....he's only played few matches.
Good call...I thought Roger was top drawer in that SF.

tennis forum is a funny place. After that SF Fed was also hailed as playing his best level ever, then two years on nobody is saying that anymore......... until now, suddenly after he played a good ATP 250 final against Zverev.

Doesn't take much for the bandwagon to get going.

Ricardo, Roger has only delivered a single performance this year, that is against Zverev, am I right? He won so much this year and we are basing our point on that too. But what's most important is, it's lovely to see this reinvented version of Roger at this age. It's unique. That's it

not the first time i see the 'best ever' after he put on a special performance, that's what i am referring to. Sure great start to the year, but he's skipped a slam and 3 months so there are simply not enough matches under his belt to make any kind of solid conclusion. If after 12 months after say 60-70 matches he puts up similar stats overall, then lets talk (about being better than his prime).

also he didn't reinvent anything really, as his game always had a lot of dimension and variety that he and coach decided to tweak several parameters, and suddenly he looks different. unlike many he can change from pure S&V when he won wimbledon in 2003 to a pure baseliner the next few years. obviously as he ages he's chosen to increase his offence even more in order to decrease his need for defence, which is at the moment paying off handsomely.

I've been saying this possibility that Fed is at his best now since Key Biscayne when I asked Del Potro about it and he didn't disagree. Then Peter Bodo asked Roger himself about it and Roger didn't disagree either. These articles are in our archives here. Every great performance by Federer gets the snowball of this topic rolling again.

Okay, but we Fed fans are just enjoying the tweaks and changes. And basically, the new Roger. So, people are getting a little carried away. Whatever Roger is doing at this age, it is still awesome. He is doing it with whatever game he still has left. But, it's amazing at the end of the day.

its probably fair to say that his level is the highest ever for anyone 35yo and above. this used to be the age when he'd be qualified to play seniors tour.

Ricardo: Federer reinvented his backhand which used to crumble against Rafa' forehand and now it beats up Rafa's forehand. He's also using the drop shot more and I believe he's mixing in more extra variety based on his experience. With all his career match play Fed is smarter and wiser now. It took a while to solve Rafa but with three wins in a row in finals this year I think it's safe to conclude Fed has finally solved the Rafa puzzle.

i think in that bh to Rafa's fh exchange, he has managed to cut down the deficit which made all the difference when contest is close. But i still see in that exchange, it's in Rafa's favour. The change in surface was also a factor which favoured Fed too when they decided to speed things up.

Rafa vs Fed on red clay this spring would have been very interesting but now we will never know who the victor would be. I'm not giving it to Rafa automatically. I think Federer could have beaten Rafa this year on clay.
