The back to back scalps of the big bombers, Isner and Dr. Ivo will gain about 30 ranking spots for Ernie, back well within the top 100.
If his game is clicking, he could win more.
In the mean time, another big upset today by Steve Johnson, who I think scored one of his beggest scalps too, ousting Anderson.

Friday's Results!

Quarterfinals
(1) D Ferrer (ESP) bt (8) F Fognini (ITA)---6-4, 6-2
S Johnson (USA) bt (2) K Anderson (RSA)---5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4
(6) G Monfils (FRA) bt L Rosol (CZE)---6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3
E Gulbis (LAT) bt (7) I Karlovic (CRO)---7-6(4), 7-6(5)

Ferrer had a rough summer but seems to be fully back. Won the Kuala Lumpur 250 and now is into the semis for his 5th title of the year and second 500. Anderson let one get away. If he wants to stay up around the top Ten, these are the matches he needs to win. Good win for Johnson. He could make his first ATP final. Monfils looks to be back too after a layoff. Karlovic and his TBs. Need to check and see how many TBs he has played this year and how many of those he has won.

Semifinals:
Ferrer vs. Monfils
Johnson vs. Gulbis

With this win, Ferrer has unofficially sealed his place in London. Tsonga is 1220 points behind him and it is mathematically impossible for him to outperform Ferrer in the next couple of weeks by that much points. Tsonga is not even playing this week and Paris gives just 1000 points even if he wins.

The only longshots now are Anderson, Cilic, Isner and Gasquet and they need to perform really
well in both Basel and Bercy to even have some outside chance.

To wrap up, David Ferrer takes his 26th title of his career, 5th title of 2015 and 2nd title in October by beating Steven Johnson 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in Vienna. I would have to check, but I believe this ties him with Tom Okker as the player with the most titles in the Open Era without a Slam win. The Energizer Grunt Machine just keeps beating his drum. Amazing.
Johnson made his first ever ATP final and came so close to winning the title. He should be taking a Houston-New-Port-Atlanta type title next year. His ranking will go up to a career high No. 33 tomorrow.
Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo took the doubles title.

Brackets:
Singles / Doubles

IIRC with how Courier felt how Isner bailed on DC, it better be worth it; at least get an "alternate" position for London! :cover :nono  :dodgy: - Congrats to Johnson; esp. after we bemoaned the "young guns!" It's impressive that both Sock (Stockholm) and Johnson played finals against 2 veterans of the top 10! :clap  :dodgy:
