Do You Root For Players From Your Own Country?

Being an American living in Japan, I'm often asked the question, especially during an international event like the Olympics, "Which country are you rooting for; America or Japan?" I usually answer "both!" or "I just want to see a good game!" Which is pretty true. When it comes to team sports, I suppose I lean towards my own home country, but not as strongly as when I lived in the States. When it comes to individual sports like tennis, the national lines are almost non-existent. When I choose a favorite player, I usually go by style of play, a rivalry, the character of the player and maybe after that, their nationality. It's just not that important to me as it used to be. Wilander was my favorite player in the 80s, followed by Courier and Agassi in the 90s, then sort of Roddick in the 00s until Murray came along.
That being said, I would like to see players from my own country be successful. I keep an eye on players like Isner and Sock and if they get up there and catch my attention, then I'll root for them. I like the way Sock plays and I think he may be my next favorite player after Murray retires.
That's one of the things I love about tennis though. It is the most international, varied and balanced sport in the world. Golf may be close to it but as long as they keep excluding other countries from the Ryder Cup, it doesn't hold a candle to the Davis Cup.
And even if my favorite player goes out, that's not the end of the tournament for me. I love seeing different players and different match-ups in the Grand Slams. I'll have to admit Federer or Nadal were never my favorites for whatever reason, so from '05 to '10 or so was pretty meh for me. Djokovic is ok but he's not one of my favorites to watch. I hope Murray or someone can step up and challenge in the slams or it could get a bit boring.
But anyways, how do you choose a favorite player? Is their nationality on the top of your check list? Or are there other things more important when choosing a favorite player? I guess a good question to ask is, "What player makes you most emotional when rooting for him/her?"

Never only because of country of origin. If I did, I would have to root for John Isner and Sam Querrey. :nono

I like Jack Sock, Tim Smyczek, Serena and Venus, and will root for them, but not because they're from the US. That's a coincidence.

For what it's worth, I feel the same during the Olympics. I root for the athletes I like, not just those from the US.

I was born and raised, and I live, in the good 'ol United States of America. That said...I'm not a fan of ANY US tennis players...and I never have been. My favorite players are Dr. Youzhny, F3 (Fognini), KA-74 (Kevin Anderson), Coolschreiber, Federer, SoderKing, and No1e. That said, I will root for all Americans during the Olympics and Davis Cup, even though I really don't care all that much about either of 'em.

No.

If Rafa faced an Irish player at a slam, I'd be rooting for Rafa, but I'd be hoping the Irish lad performed well and got something positive out of it. But I'm not really nationalistic in too many ways like that...

^ Similar to BB, I'd be inclined to root for Americans more at the Olympics then the regular ATP events and even then I wouldn't root for them over Federer. I'm sure one of these days there will be another great American player, it'd be nice just to keep it interesting but I wouldn't automatically root for them.

I'm with BB as well. Nationality is only really relevant to me at the Olympics.

Well, if you have favorites based on their personalities, then you may be more likely to cheer for your countrymen/women, you just know them better. In terms of playing style, the nationality doesn't do a difference. (OK, e.g. Spaniards usually play long points with the exception of Lopez but so do also other clay specialists)

In a sport where Finland has less success like tennis, I'm more inclined to cheer for my countrymen/women. If a Finnish player has success, it benefits the whole sport in Finland. Unless the Finnish player had a horrible playing style, I'd probably cheer for him. The biggest pleasure would be seeing tennis grow in my home country.

Then again, if there's a match like Nieminen-Wawrinka on R16, I'll probably cheer for Stan because I know Jarkko would almost surely lose before the final whereas Stan is a title contender.

Only in matches that I would otherwise be impartial about. When half the country had a Belgian flag wrapped around their shoulders during the FO final I was the only one wearing a Jennifer Capriati t-shirt. I was the only one cheering when they were done as well. :clap

I root for American players, but not over my favorites. I wish all the Americans the best, care about "American Tennis," but Mardy Fish is the only guy I would pull for against Novak, and even then, it would be on a match by match basis between those two.

Aye, there's the rub. On a selfish level, I want tennis to become more popular in the US, so that its media coverage increases, and it's no longer treated like the bastard child of sports, however I don't want to root for players simply because they're from the US.

Outside of them facing a few non-American players, I will cheer for our guys. I like Isner (the guy, not the game), so I root pretty actively for him.

I used to be more pro-American, but I find that the longer I live away from the US, the national lines start to blur more and more and I find myself rooting more for a player than a certain country. I do root for the American players, but I appreciate more the "other" players more now. It's much healthier. ;)

Don't get me wrong. It's more of a pro-U.S. than anti-other country.

I guess I've never been patriotic; starting in the 70's with my faves being Borg and Goolagong! It was hard to root for other Americans since they were so obnoxious like Connors, McEnroe, Agassi, & Roddick for the men and Serena, Shriver, Jaeger, & Austin on the ladies side OTTH! They could all be very nice people, but if I hear something kinda rude in reference to their fellow pros, it just rubs me the wrong way and I won't support them; even in DC and FC! Sampras was great and kept his mouth shut, Navratilova was just too honest for words, and Federer's beyond reproach! Nole get's flack for some reason, but he's been a very good representative as #1 for the ATP, always saying the right thing these days! :dodgy:   :popcorn

I'm from the UK and I'll always cheer for the Brits - I just feel more emotionally attached to the match when they play. Most other players I watch for enjoyment and don't really mind who wins, except for my favourite non-Brit players, Muguruza and Bencic.
