I remember the chatter on the forums at the time, particularly amongst Novak fans was that, well...IF Stan can red-line his game, he 'might' win that final. (Spoken doubtfully.) Well, he did red-line it that day. And won with those horrible shorts.
Stan was the gatekeeper to Rafa's legacy at that time. If you recall Rafa's career was in a bit of a reboot in regards how to solve the latest Novak's counter to Rafa's BH during the rally. Stan's BH was able to hit thru Novak's brilliant defense and expose small areas that could eventually make him vulnerable.

I knew Djokovic was going to lose even before the match was played. People underestimated the advantage Wawrinka had playing the first semifinal match and getting it over with relative ease on Friday to get a rest day on Saturday, while Djokovic played a hard fought 5-set semifinal against Andy Murray, which finished on Saturday. That match really took a lot out of Djokovic, and you could tell the difference in the energy level between the players during the final on Sunday, especially in sets 2-4.
Had Djokovic dispatched Murray earlier (and not lost sets 3 and 4), he probably would have more energy for the final, and the result may have been different.
