I'm with you on your point which I bolded above, until you said "Rafa going from 06 to 08," which was an ascension, not a decline, and where you seem to say that Roger's decline was "pretty glaring." I'm unclear as to which of my points you're agreeing with.

Its just the level difference, whether its an ascendency or a descendancy. They are glaring in the sense that its hard to miss when you watch them play. Of course that it doesn't mean that the player is no longer a contender. (Indeed Rafa was a contender for almost every slam save the USO in his younger days)

Another thing to keep in mind is that Roger, on his way down , way down from his peak years, managed to get to number one when all of the top guys of the time (Nole, Murray , Nadal) were having their respective peaks. The guy basically proved he could get to the top even when he is half a step slower. What does that tell you about the level of competition now?

So, when you are belittling the level of competition when Roger was having his peak years, think about what that means about his competition during 2012, when Roger was on his way down and the rest were peaking.

It of course has happened before; Jimmy Connors in '82! Most people thought he was done for the most part, just hanging around; fodder for the youngster surrounding him like McEnroe & Lendl! He beat both in major finals taking back #1 when most thought it impossible; John at Wimbledon and Ivan at the USO! I doubt Roger will hang on like Connors at 39, allowing his ranking to drop precipitously after winning his last major in '83! Only time will tell!
