Pretty weak field in Newport. Pity as I think this tournament should be much better attended given it's the Hall of Fame venue.

Surprised to see that Brown did not manage to get an entry one way or other (direct, quals, wc) here.

Maybe

Maybe he didn't want to apply/play? Actually, has he played there before?

Ya, he has played here before.

I checked as to what is happening. To my surprise, I found out that he is playing instead in Bastad on clay.

That does seem odd. Maybe just an economic choice.

Maybe it's a grass protest as he said RG seemed faster than Wimbledon.

It's wrongly situated in this grass season that we all want to make more of, but it is a shame. It's a gorgeous setting, pretty classic grass courts, I think. Certainly they have an old grass heritage. But they get relegated to an after-thought. Maybe you could change it by putting it before Wimbledon, and getting a bunch of Americans to play it. Surely the weather in Newport is no worse than Holland, England and Germany in early June.

When they added an extra week before Wimbledon, Newport was given the opportunity to move to a slot before Wimbledon. But, they rejected the offer as they felt the current timing is better for them.

Probably fits better with the already scheduled WASPy parties, and so can't break the social register's calendar. Too bad.

Dr. Ivo sent packing. I thought he was a lock for this title. Guess it'll be Iznah instead.

Agree with @kskate2, Isner looking the likely winner on the sweet green grass of Newport.

I bet Isner plays all six weeks of warm-ups accumulating lot of praise and then draws Kohlschrbrier in the third round at USO and loses to him.
