Will he play in Indian Wells/ Miami?
He seems to be willing to take it a tournament at a time, and I don't know if he has protected ranking, but I'm sure any tournament would give him a wild card if he asked for it.

From the recent news I have read,Del Potro is just taking it one tournament at a time,he hasn't committed to playing on the tour full time in 2016,I think it all depends how he feels after Del Ray beach and how his wrist feels.

So this Delray beach is just see how he is going and then he will make new decisions accordingly. For how long he can use protected rankings?

That's a good question. I don't know that he took the protected ranking, though I hope he did. But the fine points of that are pretty nerdy and hard to follow. I don't think he'll have any problem getting wild cards. He'd be anyone's first choice. But if he has protected ranking that will affect his seeding, and, if I remember correctly, that lasts for one year. If anyone cares to look it up, I'm perfectly happy to be wrong on the fine points.

Yes,though I don't think his protected ranking will apply if he decided to play Grand Slam tournaments, from memory.Again someone can provide the official ruling

Here's http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/rankings/rankings-faq the rule. If anyone can understand it, good luck to them. I thought it affected seedings, but apparently no. I guess it just gets you into the main draw without doing qualies. This applies to the first 12 tournaments that he enters, but excludes WCs, so it's not specifically a one year thing.

Let's hope the big man can come back - he's been missed.

How long does protected ranking last.

See the post above for the rule, but the first 12 tournaments he enters, excluding where he takes a WC.

I've been searching around the web, including in Spanish, but no updates on JMDP. Obviously, he's not playing MC. Presumably the calculation is not to waste a WC on a non-mandatory and rest the wrist. Maybe he'll play one of the 250s in the next couple of weeks to test the wrist and get some clay matches in with less competition? I hope to see him back soon.

His last tweet is from April 6, practicing on clay, which must mean that he will play soon somewhere:

That's good to hear about Juan Martin. Heaven knows the sport has missed him and needs him back to his best. He'll kick the no talent grinder from serbia BIG TIME !

I think DP was stellar before his injury, but his ship has sailed. We can have nostalgic feelings, but returning to his 'best' isn't going to happen. It would be nice if he would stay healthy.

IF he can get healthy and confident enough to go with his strong two hander and suffers no more physical setbacks, then anything can happen.
He could be like Agassi, and extend his career, winning a few majors as the big 4 decline or have declined significantly.

IF not, then sadly nothing much will probably happen.
His backhand slice won't be enough against the top players.

Respectfully,
