So does Rafa have four or five Davis cups because on Wikipedia they say five but on TV when I’m watching they said four.

The great Stefan Edberg was in 4 winning DC Teams, so I’m guessing with this 5th DC Rafa hold the record in the Open Era.

In the amateur era Roy Emerson hold the record with 8 DC winning teams with the legendary Aussie teams of the early to mid sixties which at one point or another had Emerson, Tony Roche, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Fred Stolle all either Major winners or finalists.

I'm not exactly clear how it's counted, but Rafa played in 4 of the winning finals for Spain, though he did play QF and SF when they won in '08. So maybe that's the confusion as to whether it's 4 or 5 wins for him?

As far as Spain, of their 6 DC wins, all have come starting in 2000, including '04, '08, '09, '11 and this year.

I've read that Nadal after the last mach said "I couldn't more, I was totally exhausted". My goodness, of course after to play 8 matches in one week he has felt that way, it was great that they had not to go to the third set, otherwise Rafa would have left the court on a stretcher o_O

Speaking of which, I wonder how everyone feels about the new format, after all was said and done? Clearly, it was a lot to do in a week, and there were too many really, really late nights. Jason Goodall was trying to talk up the new format, pros and cons. Maybe stretch it to 10 days? And if it's the one commitment, rather than 4 across the year, do you get more marquee players? I'm still not clear how it works, but anyone paying enough attention to say so and have an opinion?

I dont mind the new format though the organizers have to look at starting earlier
Sergi Bruguera said that his team did not get to bed before 3am this week, including one night where Nadal got to bed at 5am.
Other teams like USA,Italy for example also did not finish their matches until late in the morning the next day.I think we saw sone great doubles matches, which decided the tie in most matches.

Bautista Agut said,

"My dad would be mad at me if I stayed at home and didn't come back to support my team.I had the chance to say goodbye to him and I came back."

Good point...I think this format does favor doubles in a way that is interesting and fun. In the old DC format, doubles was the middle and rarely decided it, and if it did, then the whole Sunday was a dead rubber. Could breathe new life into the doubles.

That has to be one of the more gratifying wins of his career. And I don't think it's overly-sentimental to say so. It was courageous. So glad he got that win.

I do not know how he played, maybe in hindsight playing was good for him and he did himself proud and his country, also his dad.

It reminds me of 1998 when Monica Seles lost her father (who was also her coach) after a long battle with cancer and then she played RG and had an amazing run reaching the final.

He doesn't even have a great DC record. He surely played amazing today, his heart out, I guess.
