As everyone here knows, I've been a long time fan of Stan. In fact, I've been rooting for him since Saturday afternoon when Djokovic beat Murray.

It's true, I may have said the following once:

Players I dislike:

- Stan Wawrinka: to be honest this one is irrational (as opposed to rationally wanting to punch Raonic in the face). But something about his demeanor has always bothered me. He strikes me as someone who's trying to very carefully camouflage an inferiority complex but I could be just talking out of my ass.

...but that was a long time ago and I've since changed my tune about Stan. He won me over when he left his wife and kids like a true gentleman and showed new-found maturity and focus.

Him being my second favorite player has nothing to do with beating Djokovic. I just like his attitude, and especially his game. That one-handed backhand is a thing of beauty.

As a long time fan of Stan, today is a special day.

(But seriously, congrats to him and his fans. That was one of the greatest performances I've seen a major final in a good while).

When you player is completely outplayed in just about every aspect of the game... all you can do is say.

I always liked that winner hitting machine, but his performance today, my god. This would have been a straight set (18+) scene if he could have returned better today, and I am not joking. Wawrinka was literally just pushing returns over the net and still won. What's the winner count, 60?

He played great, and sustained it, which was the surprise. I thought he was cooked after the first set, and then again in the third when he failed to break, then faced a 0-40 game on serve. Truly deserved victory for the Stanimal... :clap :clap

EDIT: I'd congratulate his fans too, but he hasn't got any... :snicker

^ I suspect he had a few temporary fans on the day.

There's nothing I hate more than bandwagonning fans. As the leader of the Wawrinka fan club, I refuse these so called "temporary fans." We don't need you. The StanClub is doing fine as it is.

Bandwagonning fans? Perhaps some, but I really like him for the baseline machine he is, and being the only one who could stick it to the man in Australia. I also stated in the "Who are your faves" thread that after Fed and Rafa, Wawrinka is my boy.

I thought Fiero was the leader of the Wawrinka fanclub... :snicker

Yes, but I masterminded a Game of Thrones style Coup D'Etat. Let's just say Fiero attended the wrong wedding.

Wasn't referring to you. The StanClub welcomes you, oh Master Puppet (see what I did there?).

I suspect August will have something to say about this.

I still think Stan's AO 2014 was a fluke. Does anyone seriously expect that Stan would have maintained his high level of play that he had in the first set at AO, if only the back of the #1 ranked opponent did not give away? How many times have we seen a lowly player go lights out for 1 set only for the #1 player to come back storming and win the match, if only there were no injuries? :snicker

Exactly!

While all these Nadal fans were citing injury excuses, I, as a long time StanFan, was swearing left, right and center that Stan would have won anyway, and that playing against an injured opponent is mentally tougher than playing injured.

I tried to reason with Nadal fans but you've got an easier chance beating Nadal at the FO. As the leader of the StanClub I'm delighted we can finally move past that debacle and appreciate Stan for the multi-time slam winner he is.

Even though the OP is making a mockery, a congratulatory thread is needed to celebrate Stan.
He took it to Novak big time. He has +15 differential to -11 of Novak. He did not blink when he was 0-40 in the 3rd set and climbed back from 0-2 in 4th. He often had clutch play and thumping winners.

It is just a shame that some Player's legitimate and thumping victory gets ruined by insincere threads of appreciation by some sore folks. :cover

Well I think the OP reflects a little bit of payback on all the premature gloating that occurred over the last while, no? By yourself, among others... :popcorn

Did you catch my second post of this very thread? Did you catch my posts in the match thread? You think this victory is "ruined" because some guy made a thread on a tennis forum? Stop being so dramatic.
