one thing that Novak can take away from the experience - or probably shouldn't, because it'd be frustrating... so it's more of a comfort for Novak fans:

I think that his performance over the past two weeks was among the Top 3 of what we've seen in the past 10 years by players not named Rafael. just so happened to run into the best one.

i'd rank Novak's FO higher than any of his previous efforts. Fed's '06 or '07 would come close, game-wise; as for the emotional value, Fed's win of course is bigger, but actually beating Rafa would make Novak come close even in these terms.

I would have to disagree. It can't come close to Federer's win. Only winning the title could elevate his achievement there. From an emotional standpoint yes it's right up there, specifically because for the first time ever he has achieved the adulation that he craves, and frankly deserves. He may not appreciate it fully now, but I have a feeling he'll look back at the love the French crowd gave him later on in life and enjoy it. What a bitter sweet feeling it must have been.

you're right. of course, on the (emotional) scoreline, only a W is a W.

maybe something different: when fans talk about these performances, beating Rafa will be seen as a standout achievement, one that some might compare to the GOAT (Great, Only Asterisked, Triumph).

again, game-wise, over the course of two weeks, it's definitely among the highest (Fed's triumph was due to grit, not to an overwhelming level).

JS, you made a genuine effort at kindness, but it is true that playing well for 6 matches is no consolation to losing the 7th. And I do send my commiserations to the Novak fans. I think this was a bit of a heart-breaker. He even got a version of Nadal here that he could beat. Tantalizingly close. And once again, we're reminded why the Calendar Grand Slam in men's tennis is such a tough ask.

This is ridiculous. Me, and the rest of the Soderling fans, never got any commiseration thread.

I don't know. Front's been crying him a river for years. Plus, given what he and his buddy Nalbandian actually achieved, I bet they've had more than their share of threads/comments dedicated to them. :laydownlaughing

Which gets the bigger asterisk...Beating a crippled Folks (Soderling 2009)? Or beating an old and washed-up Folks (Djokovic 2015)? I'll go with Djokovic's beating a washed-up Folks, because I'm guessing that Folks' knees were probably hurting, too. So...Crippled and old/washed-up Folks trumps crippled Folks.
That said, Wawrinka gets the 1st place asterisk, while Federer gets the runner-up asterisk...Because Wawrinka beat the guy who beat the "old/washed-up/bad knees" Folks, while Federer beat the guy who beat the "in-his-prime, injured knees, but not old/washed-up", Folks.

By the way...JUST KIDDING!!!

I've been wondering where Billie is too. Maybe that was too tough of a loss to take?

RG is becoming a nightmare for Novak, I can only imagine what he dreams at night.
When the final stages of RG are close, he starts dreaming about the RG trophy. In his nightmares though, the trophy suddenly gets Nadal's legs from circa 2008 and starts running around Philipe Chatrier as the crowd laughs at him. He wakes up breathing heavily and sweating like crazy, but at least this year he got one big monkey off his back.
And there was this very amusing comment on the ATP site, it said something along the lines of:
Novak could easily handle the spoons and spatulas that Andy and Rafa threw at him, but couldn't do anything about Wawrinka's kitchen sinks. Lol.

Oh, that's a completely different one, in addition to being naked, he is being chased by Nadal, Fed and Wawrinka through a long dark tunnel. :laydownlaughing

He will be fully clothed in my visions, thank you very much. :cover ;)
