Uncle Sam thinks that one big win over Djoker will carry him for the duration of his career. He is out there donating points to the best defensive getter on tour. :nono
he seemed pissed at Monfils a la Isner...remember Roddick also getting angry at the crowd for cheering on Monfils..:laydownlaughing...Isner Harrison Querry are bratty entitled underachievers..:snicker
Monfils is very popular everywhere he goes...#jealousmuch

Zverev vs. Monfils will be an interesting match to watch tomorrow night. It will be interesting to see if Zverev can attack Monfils defense.

Also, Zverev has now reach his career high in rankings at 25. Hopefully, he continues to rise and not stagnate like other young players.

He isn't gonna beat the veteran Monfils tomorrow

Bo, he should not. I watched both of them playing quite a bit this week.
Zverev overall game is not yet at Monfils level. If gael is playing seriously, he will prevail.

Depends what you mean by "Monfils level." If you mean "serious Monfils," then he's a top 10 player, about on the same level as Tsonga and Berdych, and should beat the young un. If you mean "goofy Monfils," then Zverev can beat him.

Anyhow, go Ivo! I wonder what his career high ranking would have been if he had an average serve...I don't think he would have sniffed the top 200.

Although I am not surprised with the result, I am surprised with the scoreline especially in the 2nd set. Basically after the minor rain delay, Zverev was mentally drained and just could not put the ball in the court. But I will give credit to Monfils that he served really well and he was serving in the 135 range consistently so Zverev couldn't return his serve.

As for Zverev, I think this off-season will be a MAJOR KEY for his development going to the next phase of his career. He needs to put in a lot of work on his body this upcoming off season so he could get physically and mentally stronger. The ranking and talent is there now is just matter of getting stronger so he could go deeper in every tournament he plays in.

The level which was on display all week long by Gael Monfils was the first one you mentioned.

Have you been watching him lately? His return game has improved quite a bit, and his overall game is not as bad as it used to be, thus these good results recently.

I'm not worried about Zverev and am quite pleased with his results so far this season. I do hope he wins a title before the year is through, but it might have to wait until next year. But he's gone from #83 to #25 (#19 in Race). That is exactly what he should have done as a possible future elite.

But yeah, you're right that he should take another step forward next year - going deeper into Slams, winning minor titles, challenging for the top 10. I suspect it won't be until 2018 that he's a real Slam contender, wins his first Masters, top 5, etc.

Even if you don't like Karlovic, this final with Monfils is fascinating. It is like a chess match.
The crowd is having a blast.

Congrats to Gael Monfils to stage a very impressive come back from a MP down and win in 2 sets over Ivo Karlovic:
5-7, 7-6, 6-4.
This is his biggest title of his career.

Crazy to think that this is Gael's first ATP 500 title. Here are his records in finals:

Masters: 0-3
ATP 500: 1-5
ATP 250: 5-11
Overall: 6-19

That is because he was not very serious most of the time, or as you say was "goofing around".
It took sometime for him to mature...

Are you saying that Gael has finally arrived? I kind of doubt that, or that we'll see anything more than what we've seen. I think, at almost 30 years old, he is what he is. Maybe he sneaks in a Masters, who knows.

I think so and he said so too. If it was not hampered by an injury in the spring, like he often does, he would be a top 8 in live ranking.
