I felt djoker needed this one. He was by far the better player throughout tournament and had lost wimbledon final in a court he thought had had edge.
When these two are in form, it’s simply as good as it gets. There will be some ups and downs but it’s not possible for both to maintain the intensity and concentration every point. At times one will produce eye popping consistent tennis but they inevitably have a brief dip, it’s just natural.
Djoker didn’t start serving that well and was a bit off at the start, carlos also had a few mediocre games but for most of match, was incredible.
Alcaraz shot making is almost expected so doesn’t really surprise me. What i think makes him more special is his ability to use so many options and his defense. He can slice to hit off speeds, he can deceptively use drop shots from either side when he sees players playing deep, he can come to net and volley very well, surprise with sneak S&Ving…. Against novak he snuck into net at some critical points. He used the serve out wide on ad court to cripple novak during other critical points, novak can’t do much with it. He then takes away so many winners with his speed and pulled off two classic novak on the run backhands… copying novak’s best shot. He creates complex equations that make it difficult for others to solve.
Novak had become a similar player by using his slice, drop shots, sneak attacks at net and he also steals winners. Carlos is 16 years younger though and already doing it all…
This match up is so amazing as both are very complete and have a lot of options. I actually feel carlos has a slight edge now… novak can return slightly better and takes the ball slightly earlier but carlos has more feel and more power. It’s about guts and nerves with slight edge to carlos but both give each other puzzles to solve which only they can produce and solve.
