This could be an interesting and important tournament for both Nadal and Raonic. This tournament could determine who gets the 4th seed at the US Open. Nadal has a 395 points lead over Raonic coming to this week. It means that Raonic at the very least, has to reach the semifinals in order to overtake Nadal in the rankings next week. If Raonic can not get into the semifinals, then Nadal is the 4th seed in the US Open.

Maybe that's the reason that Rafa is going to play but he needs to reach the semis too?

He does not need to reach the semifinals unless Raonic makes it to the final. Basically, Raonic has to reach the semifinals or finals in order to grab that 4th seed at the US Open.

He is correct.. Rafa only made it to the round of 16 last year. He isn't defending that many points.(Remember everyone was awaiting the potential qtr with Roger but lost to Lopez)

Like I said before, Nadal could potentially face Kyrgios in the round of 16 so he could lose there. However, if he is able to get past Kyrgios, then I could see him reaching the semis. I don't see Berdych beating him (for obvious reasons) and Cilic is too inconsistent to even reach the Quarterfinals.

Rafa has withdrawn from Cincinnati, wise decision but I hope it has been more for fatigue than because his wrist

I was expecting this (see OP). The tourney has already begun and so they will not rebalance the draw. A lucky loser will become really lucky now.

What does the OP means?

Has Rafa withdrawn, or not withdrawn? I can't find any intel suggesting he's withdrawn. Where did you hear he'd withdrawn, Carol?

Just like Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Cincinnati might contain a lot of rain delays this upcoming week. It will be interesting on how the tournament will handle the potential rain delays.

Very good job by Mios to get past John Isner: 7-6, 7-6.

Djokovic isn't playing Cinci? I'm kind of surprised because I thought with Roger out for the rest of the year he'd try to win Cinci to complete his career Masters 1000 "Slam." Was he really that tried from his 1 match loss in Rio? I wonder if he regrets playing Toronto before Rio? The next Olympics he'll be 33 and the likelihood of winning the gold medal - let alone maintaining #1 - decreases exponentially after 30, especially given his style of play. He'd better find a way to shorten the points or this time next year he could find himself in the same leaky boat as Nadal.

Several surprises are happening here.
Firstly, yesterday Mahut def. Bautista-Agut
And Sugita beating Sasha Zverev,
today, Tomic beats Goffin and Coric also takes out Kyrgios.
Keep them coming...

Wrist injury from Olympics. He will prepare for last GS. So Cinci is out.
