You really don't understand the terminology, I think. You and others say that Rafa and Serena got an umpire "banned." This is not the case. Those umpires still work(ed.) They are just given a break from specific players after a controversial match/testy time in the relationship. I don't see how it needs to be seen as corruption or particularly scandalous. These umps and players see each other frequently, and I don't think there's anything wrong with giving a break. It doesn't cost the umpire work, and it gives the player a less stressful place to work until things cool off.

I agree that the umpire is not banned per se and is not making his income.

However, the umpire is BANNED from officiating against matches involving RALPH / SERENA. That is unfair and there is not basis to impose such a ban on the umpire when he did nothing wrong.

I am not saying that the umpire MUST be assigned to matches involving RALPH/SERENA. All I am saying is that they should also be part of the pool from which the actual officiating umpire is randomly picked instead of masterminding their elimination.

In the case of Serena, it's not clear that Ramos did nothing wrong. But going back to Nadal/Bernardes, it has been told to us that umpires and players taking a break is not unusual. I think you guys need to stop getting your hair on fire over something that's just not that outrageous. I'm sure someone is going to decide that it would be best not to put Kyrgios with Fergus Murphy for awhile, too. It is the nature of a fairly incestuous group of people who spend a lot of time together that they'll sometimes need a break from each other. It's not a banning, at all. You should stop using that word. Also, do you really think that umpires are randomly picked? Do we even know? I know that when Safin was likely to play his last match at Paris/Bercy, Lahyani asked to officiate and was granted the privilege. It's not always random.

I used to love that quote. Now it seems to be the driving mantra of the internet, and for some folks around here, too. Storytelling is a great and honorable tradition. However, some folks, with no art whatsoever, now seem to bake cheap narratives out of cow pies, and keep trying to sell them as fresh bread and truth.
