In 6 more weeks Serena passes Monica Seles at number 5 for all time weeks at number 1, and if Serena does well the rest of the year and holds on to number 1, she can pass Martina Hingis and be number 4.

I think that there is another reason for the anti votes.
Such domination as Serena had in 2013 creates detractors* who don't like to be dominated by just one person. Its human nature. Success can bring hate and not just love. Humans are jealous of others doing "too well".

Yep.
Serena has always had her Ha.... err.. detractors, for
many years, and I think this does factor into it.

Aloha everyone! My first post so go easy on me, my posting virginity is at stake here...lease:
I was shocked at the nature of the Poll, such that I finally decided to post, rather then just lurk and rant to myself. Perhaps it was my reaction to the topic, combined with my frustration in my inability to find the Poll on ESPN, that pushed me over the posting edge.
I was about ready to BOUNCE IT, the computer that is, when I finally found the Poll
When you view the Poll, there is a MAP link that provides the geographical source of the Voters, in the US, and votes for World Wide
http://espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=tennis&pollId=4162979
It seem 3 states voted against Serena, Idaho, Vermont, and Hawaii.. The last one surprised me not at all, 1st time in my white life I have ever been in the minority... So Idaho and Vermont hmmmm, where's Mississippi and the rest of the deep south....
The Poll reeks of racism, and demonstrates there is still is a long way to go in accepting people for who they are, not what they look like.
Serena?
If she decides to play Indian Wells, out of the spirit of Mandella's forgiveness, she is definitely the better person for it. IF NOT, I can understand and accept that as well. I watched the video of the 2011 Championship Match, and to treat any 19 year old in the manner, let alone an outstanding young professional athlete, without the Tournament Management making any attempt to control, or condemn it, was totally outrageous
Moxie629 said:^Welcome, Bounce it. That was a very thoughtful initial post. As you can see, folks around here were pretty appalled by the initial poll…basically just in the fact of it. The original error lies with ESPN, imo. How is Serena not the clear #1? It's not like some recent #1s, who have been slamlesss. And there's no nuance in the poll. To invite people even to vote on that invites malicious intent.
Yeah, but they don't doubt it. That's the problem with all polls related to tennis or any other sport. Over half of the voters don't vote according to their honest opinion but according to who they like and don't like. A 100% knows she 'should be' #1 but 40% of them don't like it, so they vote accordingly.Fiero425 said:10sfan said:I assume the voters are not close followers of the sport. They are casual viewers. I just don't understand this discussion! It makes no sense! Serena's the clear #1 player in the world with an even larger lead than Rafa for the men! If there's any real doubt in anyone's mind, they really need serious help! :lolz: :nono  uzzled :nono
